Let’s Talk About: 8 Ways Kids Can Give Back + Happy Crates

There is nothing I love more than giving back this time of year and making children smile. In our home we are gearing up for the holidays and one way I try to teach my children humility and good character is by giving back and making them part of the process. Making others smile is an important lesson I want my children to learn. This time of year is not just about getting but giving, too. I suggest starting as young as you can, because even if your child isn’t speaking yet, they are watching, learning, and soaking in everything you are doing. You are your child’s mentor and role model, so what better way to use your special parenting powers for good?

  1. Donate Toys – I help my children fill an empty box with toys that they don’t play with anymore. It could be toys that they are developmentally too old for and or toys that they have outgrown in some way. We make sure all of the toys are in working condition and have all the pieces in tact. We clean each toy and then put it in the box! We then take the box of toys to Goodwill or Salvation Army.
  2. Operation Christmas Child – Once a year we fill a shoebox of toys, books, and bathroom essentials for a child in need of those items. We track the box so we can find out what country our box goes to and the whole process turns into a creative geography lesson.
  3. Food Drive – I take my children to the grocery store and we pick out food to donate. Then we fill a grocery bag filled with boxed and canned food and donate it to the local food bank or a charity in need of food. Sometimes we even ask our neighbors or school friends to help donate as well.
  4. Toys for Tots – We make a special trip to the store, typically on Black Friday, and buy a bag filled with new, unwrapped toys, games, and stuffed animals and donate them to a local Toys for Tots drop off location.
  5. Children’s Hospital – We donate toys to our local Children’s Hospital. They are very particular on the condition of the toys, for good reason, so before you donate, make sure that you are getting the correct items in need and that the toys are new and clean.
  6. Random Acts of Kindness – With proper supervision and depending on where we are at, I will give my children a few dollars to the person in line behind us to buy their coffee, or give a couple of quarters to a little child at the toy store so they can ride one of the rides at checkout, or give a child a penny to make a wish in the fountain. This makes the stranger’s day and fills my children with joy.
  7. Pen Pal Gifts – My children have pen pals, typically the children of my friends that are of the same age, from all over the country, that we will send a letter and or a gift to once a month. The kids get really creative and thoughtful with their gifts!
  8. Secret Santa – We will pick up something small at the store, typically the dollar section at Target, and leave it on one of our neighbor’s porches for their children!

Another way to send a smile and give back to a child at the same time is by buying a Happy Crate subscription for your own child or as a gift for another child. Happy Crates is a unique gift and subscription crate company that is dedicated to sharing smiles with children fighting cancer in the US. The Leonard family, whose first-born son was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor at just 8 weeks old, owns this incredibly humble company.

“While walking the halls of the hospital after Darren’s diagnosis, time and time again, we learned the TRUE value of a smile. Something that I believe we ALL take for granted at some point, in our crazy busy lives, hustling from one thing to another, just worrying about ourselves, and taking care of our families.” – The Leonards

And what better way to help a child smile than through play? Each crate is filled with top quality, fun, unique gifts that are product tested before placed in the crate. These gifts are kid tested and mom approved. And by getting a subscription, Happy Crates does all the work for you! They shop for toys, books, crafts, and other gifts that are good quality that will engage your child and last a long time! This way, you don’t have to spend your time researching items on your own and spending a ton of time online or at the store yourself. The crates will come fully packed with goodies to your door each month. And the crates are carefully curated based on your child’s age!

Boxes are age appropriate for 3-4, 5-7 or 8+. The 3-4 aged crates are called the Smiley Crates! The 5-7 aged crates are called the Giggle Crates and the 8+ crates are called the Silly Crates! PLUS, they have single gift crates like The Courageous Superhero Celebration Crate, Fairies and Unicorns Celebration Crate, Down on the Farm Celebration Crate, Pirate Adventure Celebration Crate, and more! And its ALWAYS FREE SHIPPING!!

And did I mention how much I love working with brands that give back? You can show your support for childhood cancer and make a difference at the same time! In addition to crates, you can also shop men’s and women’s tees here https://www.sendhappycrates.com/product-category/happy-gear/ 50% of the proceeds from their Happy Crates Gear funds their mission, AND $1 from EVERY piece of their Gear is donated to their charity partner, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation!! They are a national childhood cancer foundation dedicated to raising funds for research into new treatments and cures for all children battling cancer. One step closer to a CURE, one SMILE at a time!

And for only $25 you can gift a child battling cancer with a Holiday Crate to a hospital of your choice (options on website) by clicking here https://www.sendhappycrates.com/product/holiday-crate-child-fighting-cancer/

You can purchase a 3 month, 6 month, or 12 month subscription from Happy Crates. You can expect to receive your first crate within 7-10 days after ordering and need I remind you that you always get FREE SHIPPING? And 20% of each crate subscription funds their mission to supply Happy Crates to children fighting cancer in the US.

Love that you talk about Happy Crates! Derrick and Lauren Leonard are awesome people and Darren is my godson. They have been trying for years to find a BIG way to give back to kids and families just like theirs, who may not have the same support that they have had. I can honestly say that kids love receiving Happy Crates. Also I teach high school and its important for ALL people to understand the importance of charities. I love all the options you have featured, too. Thanks for an awesome blog!

🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had t 🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had today! 🇺🇸

As soon as we woke up I started educating my children, specifically my daughter, on what the inauguration meant and why today was such a special day in history. We both were glued to the television as we watched @kamalaharris be sworn in as the first Black South Asian woman Vice President and @joebiden be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. We also were powerfully moved hearing @amandascgorman - the youngest inaugural poet in history recite “The Hill We Climb.”

My daughter was so excited to participate and recite the Pledge of Allegiance with the rest of the county and she was so proud to see and be a part of history in the making. I haven’t been to Washington D.C. in about 8 years but I promised I would take her one day when the pandemic is over.

In the meantime, I have a fun fact for you! Did you know that President Joe Biden and I both graduated from the same university? Yep! We both went to @syracuseu 🍊 And in fact, @joebiden is the first @syracuseu alumnus to become President of the United States!

And since I work from home, it can get quite noisy and distracting with my husband and two children here, so sometimes I get my best work done in the comfort of my own bed. And the best part is that I can have my new @crane_usa “4 in 1” cool mist humidifier on at all times with essential oils to help with overall wellness and since it comes with a sound machine I can block out the other noises in the house!

And at night, it helps my sinuses as I sleep, especially when the dry air of the heater is on, and it has a nightlight so my kids can see where they are going in the middle of the night when they inevitably need water or a hug!

This is our 6th #cranehumidifier style and it’s my favorite one yet! Check out my stories for a closer look! 👀 #happyhealthyhumidity

{New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude {New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude” 🌱✨🌸

Throwing it back to one of the first mommy and me photos I ever posted on my feed because I’ve been teaching my daughter about gratitude since she was this little, possibly even younger (she is two here for reference)!

Gratitude is such an important virtue and must have trait to build a child’s character. It also shows therapeutic benefits when you show gratitude to others, so why wouldn’t you want to make it a priority to teach and instill in your children?

In this blog, I have suggestions for how to teach children gratitude broken down by ages and stages from infancy to teenage years, while also including some conversation prompts, and links to my favorite gratitude journals for busy families that we use here at home!

Find the direct link to read in my bio and stories! I also published similar articles on @todayparents and @redtricycle if you follow me there! #drkimblog
DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️ I am DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️

I am that mom who wants to do it all and when I get overwhelmed or start suffering from a major case of burnout, I feel guilty if I take a break instead of giving my body and mind permission to slow down or even stop.

As moms we often feel guilty if we take a break or believe we are perceived as weak if we ask for help. I have learned that the more I ask for help and the more time I take for myself, the better I am for my children.

Guilt is an emotional response to something you perceived you did wrong, but when you experience unnecessary guilt, it’s counterproductive to healing and helping you with what you need most. So give it a try and let me know how you are going to take a break and not feel guilty about it this week below in the comments! ⤵️ #drkimparentingtips #theparentologist #drkimparentingadvice

For the last 3 years I have spent my career therapeutically helping families and children of all ages on the Autism Spectrum. Play has been a fundamental way for many of my clients to communicate if they are non-verbal. And some of my clients have had to be taught how to play with a toy or another person. The play ideas listed on the blog can be used with children with or without special needs. Play is a universal way a child can explore their world in a way that makes sense to them and cultivate imagination, creativity, and fun! As a Registered Play Therapist, I love the work I do and couldn’t be prouder of the progress my clients have made with play over the years! #drkimblog

As a Registered Play Therapist, play is the foundation to the way I help children conceptualize and conquer the world. Play is second nature to children and the way they respond to many of life’s obstacles. Sometimes as parents, it is easy to get into a power match with your children, especially when you want your children to comply with a request and they won’t budge. When this happens, we need to change the way our adult mind thinks and switch it to the way a child thinks. Instead of giving them a punitive consequence, try these play recommendations that can be used with children as young as toddlerhood all the way to adolescents! #drkimblog
