Top 12 Childproofing Products to Keep Your Children Safe

As you know, I have been a BIG fan of Toddleroo by North States products for years. I have exclusively used their baby gates and play yards since my son was less than a year old. (I linked previous blogs below) As a mom, there is nothing more important than my children’s safety. And Toddleroo is a brand I love and trust to keep my children safe.

And now they now have launched a new childproofing line and my home is even more protected than ever!! Whether it’s furniture straps, door & cabinet locks, or outlet covers, I am covered from room to room! Here are my Top 12 products and why!!

Door Knob Cover

Who wants their child opening the front door and running out into the street? Most toddlers love to feel independent and opening doors is like a key to freedom and they are quite aware of this so chances are they will want to try to open the door to play, when they hear one of their caregivers come home, when a package is delivered, etc. We first used a lock at the top of the door but if for some reason we forgot to flip it, the door could be opened, so putting a door knob cover is perfect because my son cannot turn and open the door even though he’s tried dozens of times! It only took seconds to install and it was super easy to attach, and it may just save your child’s life!

Adjustable Strap Locks

This has come in so handy when wanting to keep the toilet seats shut and locked!! Toddlers love to put items in a toilet and see what happens when said items are flushed!! Well, not in my house! It’s super easy and quick to install but sticky, so make sure it’s in the right place when you put it on because it’s hard to come off!

Large Sliding Cabinet Lock

This beauty is super easy and quick to install and we love having one on our kitchen cabinet doors under the sink. My son loves to explore hidden places and closed doors, what toddler doesn’t? But like most families, we keep our trash bags, dishwasher liquid, rinse aid, and more harmful items under the sink. Whether it’s avoiding suffocation from the plastic or calling poison control from the chemicals, this lock keeps everything and everyone safe. And its not an eye sore! It’s sleek and thin and we barely notice ours but know our little guy is protected! *Dangerous products should always be moved out of reach of small children.

Gel Corner Protectors

Our son is at the perfect height to smack his head on the corner of our granite countertop kitchen island. And without the gel protectors, he could get a pretty bad hit, so these tiny clear lifesavers will help protect his head when he’s not looking where he’s going or running too close! They are also super quick and easy to install!

Premium Pinch Protector

Both of my children have gotten their fingers trapped in a doorway when the door is shut and it hurts!! Their fingers are so tiny and fragile, these pinch protectors are so genius and come in handy for bedroom or bathroom doors! They can go on or come off instantly as much as you want them to and will save you from potentially any broken fingers and a lot of pain and tears!

Sliding Outlet Cover

This is another solution to plug protectors but this replaces the entire outlet cover where the plug is covered and has to be slid over to be used. My toddler wasn’t able to hold it open long enough to stick his little fingers in, so I know it works!! It’s fairly simple to put on, but you will need a screwdriver to complete the task!!

Furniture & TV Strap

We have all heard about stories of toddlers climbing on top of furniture and then it falling over and crushing them. It’s a chilling and terrifying thought, but a real potential threat and my son is a climber!! I didn’t want anything in his room to be an unsafe space for him, so my husband installed the furniture strap to his dresser first before using other straps for the television and other furniture in the house. It didn’t take him long to do and it was fairly simple, but you have to have tools, like a drill and a stud finder. Out of all the childproofing we did, this took the most time and was the most in depth part of the process.

Plug Protectors

We all know little fingers like to touch everything, especially little holes to explore in the wall!! But not on my watch! These tiny little life savers can save your child from being electrocuted and they are so easy and quick to install! We even take them on vacation for the plugs at hotels!

Sliding Door & Window Lock

Similar to the front door scenario, I don’t want my toddler being able to unlock the sliding glass door and freely going outside into the backyard unsupervised. The lock is super quick and easy to install and will keep your toddler inside and safe! The window lock offers the same protection so your child can’t open the window. Obviously I don’t need to tell you the dangers of an open window, especially if you have a two story home!

Foam Corner Protectors

Our staircase has sharp edges and when our toddler is going too fast around the corners, these foam protectors keep him safe from the edges. They are super quick and easy to install, dependent on the surface you’re adhering to, a little extra tape might be required to make sure it sticks well and you may have to replace it a few times to keep them on and in place!

Drawer & Cabinet Tab Latches

My husband and I keep a lot of things in our bathroom drawers that aren’t safe for toddlers whether it’s a pair of scissors, a razor, or even mouthwash. The latches keep the drawers shut and your toddler safe. They are fairly quick and easy to install, too!

It’s always better to be safe than sorry. Invest in your child and in the safety of your home. Toddlers are naturally curious, and as parents, it’s our job to protect them and keep them safe. This means setting up boundaries to their play, so you can still foster curiosity and independence but in a safe environment where you won’t have to worry about their wellbeing. These childproofing items are inexpensive, easy and quick solutions for your home, and there is no excuse not to have them! Trust me, you’ll thank me later!!

🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had t 🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had today! 🇺🇸

As soon as we woke up I started educating my children, specifically my daughter, on what the inauguration meant and why today was such a special day in history. We both were glued to the television as we watched @kamalaharris be sworn in as the first Black South Asian woman Vice President and @joebiden be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. We also were powerfully moved hearing @amandascgorman - the youngest inaugural poet in history recite “The Hill We Climb.”

My daughter was so excited to participate and recite the Pledge of Allegiance with the rest of the county and she was so proud to see and be a part of history in the making. I haven’t been to Washington D.C. in about 8 years but I promised I would take her one day when the pandemic is over.

In the meantime, I have a fun fact for you! Did you know that President Joe Biden and I both graduated from the same university? Yep! We both went to @syracuseu 🍊 And in fact, @joebiden is the first @syracuseu alumnus to become President of the United States!

And since I work from home, it can get quite noisy and distracting with my husband and two children here, so sometimes I get my best work done in the comfort of my own bed. And the best part is that I can have my new @crane_usa “4 in 1” cool mist humidifier on at all times with essential oils to help with overall wellness and since it comes with a sound machine I can block out the other noises in the house!

And at night, it helps my sinuses as I sleep, especially when the dry air of the heater is on, and it has a nightlight so my kids can see where they are going in the middle of the night when they inevitably need water or a hug!

This is our 6th #cranehumidifier style and it’s my favorite one yet! Check out my stories for a closer look! 👀 #happyhealthyhumidity

{New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude {New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude” 🌱✨🌸

Throwing it back to one of the first mommy and me photos I ever posted on my feed because I’ve been teaching my daughter about gratitude since she was this little, possibly even younger (she is two here for reference)!

Gratitude is such an important virtue and must have trait to build a child’s character. It also shows therapeutic benefits when you show gratitude to others, so why wouldn’t you want to make it a priority to teach and instill in your children?

In this blog, I have suggestions for how to teach children gratitude broken down by ages and stages from infancy to teenage years, while also including some conversation prompts, and links to my favorite gratitude journals for busy families that we use here at home!

DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️ I am DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️

I am that mom who wants to do it all and when I get overwhelmed or start suffering from a major case of burnout, I feel guilty if I take a break instead of giving my body and mind permission to slow down or even stop.

As moms we often feel guilty if we take a break or believe we are perceived as weak if we ask for help. I have learned that the more I ask for help and the more time I take for myself, the better I am for my children.

Guilt is an emotional response to something you perceived you did wrong, but when you experience unnecessary guilt, it’s counterproductive to healing and helping you with what you need most. So give it a try and let me know how you are going to take a break and not feel guilty about it this week below in the comments! ⤵️ #drkimparentingtips #theparentologist #drkimparentingadvice

For the last 3 years I have spent my career therapeutically helping families and children of all ages on the Autism Spectrum. Play has been a fundamental way for many of my clients to communicate if they are non-verbal. And some of my clients have had to be taught how to play with a toy or another person. The play ideas listed on the blog can be used with children with or without special needs. Play is a universal way a child can explore their world in a way that makes sense to them and cultivate imagination, creativity, and fun! As a Registered Play Therapist, I love the work I do and couldn’t be prouder of the progress my clients have made with play over the years! #drkimblog

As a Registered Play Therapist, play is the foundation to the way I help children conceptualize and conquer the world. Play is second nature to children and the way they respond to many of life’s obstacles. Sometimes as parents, it is easy to get into a power match with your children, especially when you want your children to comply with a request and they won’t budge. When this happens, we need to change the way our adult mind thinks and switch it to the way a child thinks. Instead of giving them a punitive consequence, try these play recommendations that can be used with children as young as toddlerhood all the way to adolescents! #drkimblog
