As a mom, I don’t have as much time in my day to do the same type of self-care I used to do before I had children. But here’s the thing. I am being mindful this year to be healthy not only physically, but also emotionally, mentally, and nutritionally. My overall wellness is a goal that I intentionally try to meet and exceed each and every day. I made this commitment not only for my own wellbeing, but also to be a good role model for my children in hopes to live a longer, healthier, and happier life for them. Plus I believe that I am a better mom when I take care of myself first before I take care of others. I believe that being active, maintaining a healthy diet, and practicing self-care is a lifestyle choice that needs to start early in life. And I am making an intentional choice to do this now while my children are so young! This is a new year and a new me! And I am dedicating myself to be disciplined in having more self-care in order to cultivate a daily lifestyle change.
Between cooking meals and packing lunches to working and school pick up, there just isn’t much time in the day to slow down. If I wait to find time in my day to self-care, it won’t happen. I literally have to create time in my day for self-care. Keep in mind that I am an active mom on the go, so I’m not talking about going to get a spa treatment or taking an extended bubble bath each day. I’m talking about small moments in my day that I carve out to make my own. Little things I do for myself to reset, recharge, and reactivate. Whether you are a mom that works at home or a mom that works outside the home, these are things you do at home or on the go! Here are my Top 5 Ways to Self-Care in Your Busy Day!
Self-Care Tip #1: I have been able to self-care is by keeping a Gratitude Journal. I wake up 15-30 minutes earlier than my children, when the house is quiet and peaceful, and I write what I am grateful for each day. This can also be a time to read a daily devotional, mediate, practice deep breathing, or even do a few yoga stretches. You can also use this time to detox from your phone. Start your day renewing your mind, body, and soul.
Self-Care Tip #2: I also self-care each day by getting fresh air. Whether it’s a short walk in the neighborhood or a trip to the park, I am out of the house! I am not working on my phone or my computer. I am not cleaning. I am not cooking. I am not paying bills. I am not doing anything stressful. I am soaking in a little Vitamin D and also getting a little exercise. Sometimes I do this in the morning to set the mood for the day or I wait until late afternoon when there is a lull in the day. I call this the witching hour walk!
Self-Care Tip #3: Snow White may whistle while she works, but I listen to Pandora. I put on soft music, typically Baby Mozart, Tristan Prettyman, or Ray LaMontagne, and work on business or home related activities! Listening to music helps alleviate any stress, heartache, or negative feelings from the day. Music is also known to reduce anxiety and depression as well as increase cognitive abilities and heightens concentration! So listen and work away! You will get a lot done and feel good about it at the same time! WE listen to music each day as a family while we do crafts, cook meals, or even to just have an impromptu dance party midday! And this is easily something that can be incorporated any time of the day at home, in the car, at the park, or at work!
Self-Care Tip #4: Volunteer and help a friend! When we help others, we help ourselves, too! Offering a hand to someone else, not only helps boost our mental wellbeing, but research studies have shown that it may even lead to a longer life! So text or call a friend and tell them you are thinking of them. Ask if you can help them in some way. Reach out to a new friend each day. You may not be able to help them in that moment, but sometimes its enough that you offered. If you have time, meet them for coffee or a play date or make plans for brunch or a pedicure over the weekend. Practice thinking, caring, and doing for others.
Self-Care Tip #5: Another way I self-care is by staying hydrated and watching what I put in my body to keep me healthy, clean, and strong. wanu water, short for WAter+NUtrition, is the first ever, nutrient infused water on the market! Located in sunny Southern California, like me, each bottle is packed with antioxidants and contains 12 essential vitamins and nutrients! Each bottle contains Vitamins C, E, A, K, B1, B3, B5, B6, B12, Biotin, Folic Acid, and Fiber! All of the B Vitamins are so important to me because I am not a caffeine drinker and B Vitamins provide natural energy for me to get through my day!
Each bottle of wanu water contains 6 grams of NON-GMO fiber, which is 24% of your daily recommended intake, which is also comparable to two bananas! And, if you didn’t already know, fiber is so important to normalize and maintain your digestive system and help control your blood sugar levels. Each bottle is only 5-10 calories per serving and 0, yes zero, grams of sugar! They use monk fruit and stevia to create the naturally sweetened water, which I love because they contain no artificial sweeteners. And for all the mamas like me that are gluten free, wanu water is not only gluten free but also vegan! And since I avoid BPA like the plague, I am happy to report that wanu water is packaged in BPA free bottles! It’s clean hydration at its core and #youknowyouwanu, too!
I have tried 3 flavors of wanu water; Peach Passion, Kiwi Cucumber, and Watermelon Raspberry. They all tasted delicious and refreshing, and also quenched my thirst when I needed it most! And they kept me hydrated throughout the day! I also love knowing that I am getting essential vitamins and nutrients with every sip. Talk about self-care! You can find wanu water at your local Vons, Albertsons, Safeway, and Pavilions! It was easy to locate in the store as I found mine in the water aisle, Aisle 16 to be exact, where I also found snacks, tofu and soy products. #NewYearNewWater
