As a busy mom how many times have you caught yourself saying that you can’t afford to get sick? If you are like me, it’s been countless times! And I find myself saying it more during the holiday season when our calendar is jammed packed with holiday parties, school performances, work events, dance recitals, and family travel! No mom ever wants to get sick so the best gifts you can give yourself this holiday season are preparedness and prevention. Winter germs are rampant and pretty much unavoidable so being prepared for when illness strikes is just smart parenting. If you catch symptoms early enough you can possibly lessen the length of the illness and or the severity of the symptoms. So don’t wait until you are actually sick to go to the store and get medicine. Stock up now and thank me later!
In fact, I just went to Walmart this week to get my #VicksHolidayFix. I picked up a box of Vicks Cold and Flu DayQuil/NyQuil with VapoCOOL. I love getting the combo box because Vicks has you covered while you are awake and while you sleep. The DayQuil is non-drowsy and will help get you through your day and relieve symptoms like fever, cough, congestion, and sinus pressure as well as minor aches and pains. The NyQuil will help you get a good night’s sleep and relief from your plaguing cold and flu symptoms. You can either choose between coated caplets or liquid form.
With two children in tow, I typically don’t have time to run errands this time of year. I’m sure you can relate to the struggle of getting everyone in and out of the car, finding a parking spot, and then having to say no to toys and treats they find in the store along the way. So I like to take advantage of Walmart’s Online Grocery Pickup. I easily and quickly place my order online at grocery.walmart.com, select a pickup time, and then head over to the store and my order is brought out to my car when I arrive. No lines. No fighting for a parking spot. And no one has to get in and out of carseats! Talk about a Christmas miracle—this is a huge time saver! Not only is this service efficient, if you are also feeling under the weather when you go, it is a great way to not spread your germs in public and not waste your energy walking around the store when you should be in bed resting!
Right now there are so many ways to save on Vicks at Walmart! iBotta has multiple offers going on that you can take advantage of and you can get a bonus $1.25 rebate when you use both iBotta offers below! * $1 off Vicks Nyquil at Walmart * $0.75 off Vicks VapoDrops at Walmart. And if you still have your 11/25 newspaper lying around, you can get a coupon for $1 off any Vicks product at Walmart (except drops, Sinex, and ZzQuil). https://tap.fit/SJImU4g1N
Now that you are prepared, here are my tips to actively try and prevent yourself from getting sick and or even lessen the time and severity of the symptoms.
Tip 1: Wash hands often! I am constantly on the go and it’s hard to wash my hands often especially when I don’t always have access to a sink, soap, and warm water. So if you are on the go a lot like me, make sure to carry hand sanitizer in your diaper bag/purse and in the glove compartment of your car – especially if you work around a lot of children like me! And try not to open doors with your hands! When you are out in public, try not to open doors using a handle or doorknob. If possible pull open the door with a baby wipe or napkin and use your elbow or body to push open doors!
Tip 2: Get exercise! Go outside and get fresh air on a regular basis. When you go outside you can get some extra Vitamin D from the sun, which is also important to boost immunity!
Tip 3: Make sure you are getting enough sleep! When you don’t get adequate sleep, your risk for a cold or flu nearly doubles. Stick to a regular sleeping schedule as often as you can and aim for 8 hours of sleep at night. I know as a mom that can seem impossible, but try your best!
Tip 4: Reduce stress! Most of us moms are overwhelmed and overworked but increased stress levels will weaken your immune system. That is why self care is so important this time of year. Learning coping skills to manage your stressful schedule might just be answer to a happy, healthy holiday season!
Tip 5: Play! As a play therapist, this tip of mine won’t surprise you! Research has shown that adults with social support are less likely to get sick, at least less than others with fewer social supports. So go out and play! Friends not only have health benefits but also emotional benefits that improve mood!
