How many languages do you speak? Even if you aren’t fluent, can you talk conversationally in more than one language?
Growing up I was required to take a second language in middle school, high school, and college. I chose Spanish as my language of choice and ended up learning a lot! However, after I graduated I rarely spoke in the language on a regular basis and forgot the majority of what I learned. When learning a foreign language, you have to learn it in more than a school setting. You have to immerse yourself in it and speak it regularly. I have always had some regrets of not pursuing traveling abroad to learn and speak the language firsthand. I just never knew how valuable learning a second language was until I started working as a professional therapist.
Living in Southern California, where Spanish is spoken frequently, many jobs require and or prefer bilingual therapists. Many of the schools I worked in for half of a decade had a 96%+ Hispanic population. There were times where I wasn’t able to speak to some of the kids’ parents that were on my caseload because I couldn’t speak their language. I felt that not having direct access to talk to the parents was a disservice to my clients. Luckily I worked with Spanish speaking case managers that were able to translate for me, but it’s held me back from certain opportunities in my career, especially in salary.
And now as a mom, I want to start teaching a second language to my children early in life. As their teacher, I want them to learn it while their brains are still growing and can retain the information better and longer. I want them to be able to incorporate it in as many years as they can before they begin applying for jobs. I don’t just want them to learn it, I want them to know it for a lifetime.
And now they can! Talkbox.Mom is a company where you can start talking in a new language with your family the first day you start! (ad) The founder/owner of this incredible company is Adelaide Olguin. She is a mom of two boys and they have lived in five different countries so far as a family!
