Let’s Talk About: Our Baby Food Journey + Amara

Both of my children started showing developmental signs that they were ready for food at around 5 months old. Because my milk supply has always been just enough or seemingly barely enough at times, introducing foods has always been a little bit of a relief for me. I still nurse my son on command and as often as possible as this is my priority way of feeding him. After discussing my plan with his pediatrician, I now feed him 2-3 times a day depending on his nap schedule and appetite. We started with avocado followed by banana, sweet potato, butternut squash, carrots, pears, zucchini, and apples. We have also recently included yogurt, too!

He is only 7 months old, but he already has 5 teeth and has shown an active interest in food for some time. Always talk to your pediatrician before starting your baby on purees and or solids if you choose to do baby led weaning. Once your doctor gives you the green light, typical developmental signs to look for in your baby for food readiness include your baby will sit well without support, your baby watches you eat and his or her mouth will move when you chew, your baby won’t push food out of his or her mouth due to the tongue thrust reflex, and your baby has started to develop the pincer grasp, where he or she will pick up items, including food, between the thumb and forefinger.

A great website for introducing your baby to new foods is http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com This website is a great resource for knowing what foods are appropriate to feed your baby depending on his or her age and how to prepare each one. We typically introduce one new food each week once we know he doesn’t have an allergic reaction. Once we get through a few days of a dedicated fruit or vegetable, we move on to the next one. Then we mix in some of his favorite foods to give some variety to his diet.

It is very important to me that I feed my baby with homemade organic baby food as much as possible. Each week I pick up his favorite fruits and vegetables at the store and at least one new fruit and vegetable to add to his diet. And once he is old enough I will start feeding him quinoa cereal and make sure he eats gluten free food and snacks until he is at least one year old.

But let’s be honest for a minute. I am a mother and my reality isn’t always as picture perfect and ideal as I’d like. I don’t always have time to make homemade baby food and since I’m on the go so much with my children, meals cannot always be at home and I need a healthy and efficient alternative to eat healthy and organic food on the go.

Then I found Amara Organic Baby Food. It’s the best organic baby food alternative to my homemade food. And here’s why!

The Health

As a health conscious mom I love that all of their food is organic and are free of pesticides and chemical additives. Plus when you look at the ingredients on the back of the pouches you only see the fruit or vegetable that’s inside the pouch, there are no additives or fillers of any kind. And the pouches are Non-GMO verified. And many of the packets are gluten free, too!

“Our unique technique also uses less process than traditional baby food highly pasteurized purees, this means less sugar and more nutrients than the traditional baby food.”- Amara Organic Baby Food

The Preparation

Did I mention how busy it is to be a mom? Maybe you can relate? When I am on the go I need something that is simple to take with me without having to be refrigerated and quick and easy to make without much effort from me in my ever multitasking world. And even though I want the luxury of efficient food, I don’t want to compromise on the healthy benefits and the taste. With Amara Organic Baby Food, I am still getting organic fruits and vegetables that I would buy at the store, yet when going out, all I need is the pouch, a container, a spoon, and some water. We went out a few times this week and it was very easy to take and make the food at the restaurant and the park! Amara Organic Baby Food is made using a unique cold pressure technique that allows them to lock up 95% of the original nutrients. And since the food is dried, all you do is mix some water, breastmilk or formula, stir, and serve!

The Taste

To be honest, my son has been a little fickle on his taste for some new foods. I was unsure what he’d think of this new food venture, but I am not exaggerating when I say that he loved the Amara Organic Baby Food pouches. We have used some other brand packets in the past and I have wasted and thrown away so much food because he hasn’t finished the packet in a single sitting and didn’t finish it within the recommended 24 hours after being refrigerated. Plus the consistency of these packets lacked the texture of the homemade food I’d make and I don’t think he liked it. Amara Organic Baby Food’s texture mimics homemade food with similar smells and tastes. I dare you to #tastethedifference!

And did I mention I love that Amara Organic Baby Food prepares each pouch based on the baby’s age and only has enough food in the pouch that the baby’s tummy will fit? With every pouch my son ate, he finished the entire contents with none to throw away or save for later. He literally loved it so much he ate every last spoonful with delight. He couldn’t wait to get more and more.

🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had t 🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had today! 🇺🇸

As soon as we woke up I started educating my children, specifically my daughter, on what the inauguration meant and why today was such a special day in history. We both were glued to the television as we watched @kamalaharris be sworn in as the first Black South Asian woman Vice President and @joebiden be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. We also were powerfully moved hearing @amandascgorman - the youngest inaugural poet in history recite “The Hill We Climb.”

My daughter was so excited to participate and recite the Pledge of Allegiance with the rest of the county and she was so proud to see and be a part of history in the making. I haven’t been to Washington D.C. in about 8 years but I promised I would take her one day when the pandemic is over.

In the meantime, I have a fun fact for you! Did you know that President Joe Biden and I both graduated from the same university? Yep! We both went to @syracuseu 🍊 And in fact, @joebiden is the first @syracuseu alumnus to become President of the United States!

And since I work from home, it can get quite noisy and distracting with my husband and two children here, so sometimes I get my best work done in the comfort of my own bed. And the best part is that I can have my new @crane_usa “4 in 1” cool mist humidifier on at all times with essential oils to help with overall wellness and since it comes with a sound machine I can block out the other noises in the house!

And at night, it helps my sinuses as I sleep, especially when the dry air of the heater is on, and it has a nightlight so my kids can see where they are going in the middle of the night when they inevitably need water or a hug!

This is our 6th #cranehumidifier style and it’s my favorite one yet! Check out my stories for a closer look! 👀 #happyhealthyhumidity

{New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude {New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude” 🌱✨🌸

Throwing it back to one of the first mommy and me photos I ever posted on my feed because I’ve been teaching my daughter about gratitude since she was this little, possibly even younger (she is two here for reference)!

Gratitude is such an important virtue and must have trait to build a child’s character. It also shows therapeutic benefits when you show gratitude to others, so why wouldn’t you want to make it a priority to teach and instill in your children?

In this blog, I have suggestions for how to teach children gratitude broken down by ages and stages from infancy to teenage years, while also including some conversation prompts, and links to my favorite gratitude journals for busy families that we use here at home!

DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️ I am DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️

I am that mom who wants to do it all and when I get overwhelmed or start suffering from a major case of burnout, I feel guilty if I take a break instead of giving my body and mind permission to slow down or even stop.

As moms we often feel guilty if we take a break or believe we are perceived as weak if we ask for help. I have learned that the more I ask for help and the more time I take for myself, the better I am for my children.

Guilt is an emotional response to something you perceived you did wrong, but when you experience unnecessary guilt, it’s counterproductive to healing and helping you with what you need most. So give it a try and let me know how you are going to take a break and not feel guilty about it this week below in the comments! ⤵️ #drkimparentingtips #theparentologist #drkimparentingadvice

For the last 3 years I have spent my career therapeutically helping families and children of all ages on the Autism Spectrum. Play has been a fundamental way for many of my clients to communicate if they are non-verbal. And some of my clients have had to be taught how to play with a toy or another person. The play ideas listed on the blog can be used with children with or without special needs. Play is a universal way a child can explore their world in a way that makes sense to them and cultivate imagination, creativity, and fun! As a Registered Play Therapist, I love the work I do and couldn’t be prouder of the progress my clients have made with play over the years! #drkimblog

As a Registered Play Therapist, play is the foundation to the way I help children conceptualize and conquer the world. Play is second nature to children and the way they respond to many of life’s obstacles. Sometimes as parents, it is easy to get into a power match with your children, especially when you want your children to comply with a request and they won’t budge. When this happens, we need to change the way our adult mind thinks and switch it to the way a child thinks. Instead of giving them a punitive consequence, try these play recommendations that can be used with children as young as toddlerhood all the way to adolescents! #drkimblog
