Let’s Talk About: Nursing in Public with Bravado Designs

As a first time mom I avoided nursing in public as much as possible. It was awkward and anxiety provoking to say the least. I would constantly try to maneuver my body in a position that wouldn’t expose me while one hand was trying to hold my baby and the other hand was trying to adjust the nursing cover, pull up my shirt and pull down my nursing bra. Once I broke out into a sweat in just a few short minutes trying to get settled into a position that was comfortable for my baby without too many distractions. Once we finally made it into an acceptable position, my baby would continuously play with and pull on my nursing cover and half the time it would fall off my shoulder or get too close to her face and she would swat at it to go away instead of actually eating, which was the entire purpose. I was constantly worried what other people thought and if I would offend anyone. I had a few nursing bras but they never fit quite right. So unless I had to, I would only nurse her at home or in the car and wouldn’t use a nursing cover or even a nursing bra if I could help it.

As a second time mom I am much more comfortable in my own skin and I have breastfed in all sorts of public places with pride and confidence. I am better equip not only with a seasoned approach to motherhood, but also with new products like a new nursing cover from Covered Goods that covers my entire body including my back and sides instead of just my top portion and new nursing bras from Bravado Designs that are stylish and flattering, super comfortable, and easy to use.

Honestly, after years of breastfeeding two babies, I have tried a few different brands of nursing bras and none of them felt or looked quite right. They were made of thick, scratchy material or had no design or style that made me end up feeling frumpy. The cups typically wouldn’t fit right and the sides would dig into my skin or bulge out like wings and be too uncomfortable to wear longer than I had to. With my new Bravado Designs nursing bras, I wear them all day and forget I’m even wearing anything at all because they are so comfortable and fit so well. Comfort Never Looked So Good!

Bravado Designs generously sent me four nursing bras to try from their new spring Petal-Soft Collection and I love them all for different reasons. My absolute favorite is the new Ballet nursing bra. I have never had a more form fitting, comfortable to the point you forget you are wearing a bra, easy to nurse bra in my life. And the fabric is just thick enough to give the coverage and support you need without any type of padding. They call it Petal-Soft fabric and the name perfectly describes it better than I ever could. The one they sent me was in the color Bare, which is the best because you can wear a white t-shirt and you can’t see the nursing bra underneath. There is no back closure so nothing digs into you but it’s better than a sports bra because you can still adjust the straps on each side for the perfect fit. And when you are ready to nurse there is no snap to take apart, you just pull-away to the side and you are good to go, so it’s quick and efficient – perfect for a hungry baby! This nursing bra is especially comfortable to wear to sleep and is easy to use in the middle of the night when it’s dark and you are half asleep during nursing sessions. Its no fuss design will have you and your baby so happy! And if I’m being honest, I haven’t taken it off in about two days, since I haven’t left the house, and at one point I forgot I was even wearing it at all! And yet I still had sufficient support! That’s how magical this nursing bra is!

The next bra I tried was the new Buttercup nursing bra. This style looks like a regular bra and sizing is done by your actual cup size. The color I received was called Watercolor and it’s so feminine and pretty, just the way a mother should feel. It’s so pretty, in fact, my husband didn’t even know it was a nursing bra and had many compliments for it! It is a limited edition color that supports www.breasthealth.org. Proceeds from the bra’s sales will help support educating moms how breastfeeding reduces breast cancer risk. As a breast cancer survivor, this is very important to me and why breastfeeding my babies as long as possible is not just preference, but may help contribute to the prevention of the breast cancer from returning.

At first I was hesitant about this bra because the other nursing bras I have in this style are itchy, uncomfortable, and don’t fit well in the front since one side of me is bigger than the other. Typically, one side ends up digging into me and the other has a gap in it. However, I was more than pleasantly satisfied with this new Bravado Designs nursing bra because despite the way I am shaped, both sides fit perfectly and I could wear it for the entire day and it never became uncomfortable once. Just like all of my regular bras, this nursing bra doesn’t have an underwire, but it has ample support, coverage, and lift. It’s that Petal-Soft fabric that makes it feel so good on your skin! And the reason it fits so well is because of the soft foam cups and stretchy material that accommodates for changing shape, as we know us moms experience numerous times throughout pregnancy and postpartum. This nursing bra in particular is also great because the straps can be converted into a criss-cross shape and the company also provides you with bra extenders in the same color design as the bra itself.

I was also sent a bra accessory that is the most helpful for a mom on the go, like me. It is called the Clip and Pump bra and I received it in the color called Dove Heather. This masterpiece of a hands-free nursing bra is ideal to wear when you know you’ll have to pump or to keep in your purse, glove compartment, or diaper bag for use when needed. Since I work inside and outside the home I occasionally have to pump in the car, in the office, or at home while I am doing work late at night between feedings. This hands free bra allows me to multitask and drive with two hands on the wheel, write my clinical notes at the office, or type my blog at home while also pumping! How genius is that? Everything on your body is fully covered and there is no need to remove your blouse to use. The nursing bra stays put while you simply clip on the back strap and insert the pumping shields in place.

The last one I tried is called Body Silk Seamless nursing bra and it was given to me in my favorite color of all time; in this case it is called Sea Glass. This is also a limited edition nursing bra that comes in 8 different colors and pairs perfectly with the clip and pump bra. I call this nursing bra a glorified sports bra. It comes with removable foam inserts for extra padding and double layer fabric for nipple coverage and discretion. It also has 4-way stretch fabric that molds to your changing shape. It is super comfortable and has adjustable straps in the back and on both sides to make it a perfect fit. It gave me just the right amount of lift, too.

🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had t 🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had today! 🇺🇸

As soon as we woke up I started educating my children, specifically my daughter, on what the inauguration meant and why today was such a special day in history. We both were glued to the television as we watched @kamalaharris be sworn in as the first Black South Asian woman Vice President and @joebiden be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. We also were powerfully moved hearing @amandascgorman - the youngest inaugural poet in history recite “The Hill We Climb.”

My daughter was so excited to participate and recite the Pledge of Allegiance with the rest of the county and she was so proud to see and be a part of history in the making. I haven’t been to Washington D.C. in about 8 years but I promised I would take her one day when the pandemic is over.

In the meantime, I have a fun fact for you! Did you know that President Joe Biden and I both graduated from the same university? Yep! We both went to @syracuseu 🍊 And in fact, @joebiden is the first @syracuseu alumnus to become President of the United States!

And since I work from home, it can get quite noisy and distracting with my husband and two children here, so sometimes I get my best work done in the comfort of my own bed. And the best part is that I can have my new @crane_usa “4 in 1” cool mist humidifier on at all times with essential oils to help with overall wellness and since it comes with a sound machine I can block out the other noises in the house!

And at night, it helps my sinuses as I sleep, especially when the dry air of the heater is on, and it has a nightlight so my kids can see where they are going in the middle of the night when they inevitably need water or a hug!

This is our 6th #cranehumidifier style and it’s my favorite one yet! Check out my stories for a closer look! 👀 #happyhealthyhumidity

{New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude {New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude” 🌱✨🌸

Throwing it back to one of the first mommy and me photos I ever posted on my feed because I’ve been teaching my daughter about gratitude since she was this little, possibly even younger (she is two here for reference)!

Gratitude is such an important virtue and must have trait to build a child’s character. It also shows therapeutic benefits when you show gratitude to others, so why wouldn’t you want to make it a priority to teach and instill in your children?

In this blog, I have suggestions for how to teach children gratitude broken down by ages and stages from infancy to teenage years, while also including some conversation prompts, and links to my favorite gratitude journals for busy families that we use here at home!

DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️ I am DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️

I am that mom who wants to do it all and when I get overwhelmed or start suffering from a major case of burnout, I feel guilty if I take a break instead of giving my body and mind permission to slow down or even stop.

As moms we often feel guilty if we take a break or believe we are perceived as weak if we ask for help. I have learned that the more I ask for help and the more time I take for myself, the better I am for my children.

Guilt is an emotional response to something you perceived you did wrong, but when you experience unnecessary guilt, it’s counterproductive to healing and helping you with what you need most. So give it a try and let me know how you are going to take a break and not feel guilty about it this week below in the comments! ⤵️ #drkimparentingtips #theparentologist #drkimparentingadvice

For the last 3 years I have spent my career therapeutically helping families and children of all ages on the Autism Spectrum. Play has been a fundamental way for many of my clients to communicate if they are non-verbal. And some of my clients have had to be taught how to play with a toy or another person. The play ideas listed on the blog can be used with children with or without special needs. Play is a universal way a child can explore their world in a way that makes sense to them and cultivate imagination, creativity, and fun! As a Registered Play Therapist, I love the work I do and couldn’t be prouder of the progress my clients have made with play over the years! #drkimblog

As a Registered Play Therapist, play is the foundation to the way I help children conceptualize and conquer the world. Play is second nature to children and the way they respond to many of life’s obstacles. Sometimes as parents, it is easy to get into a power match with your children, especially when you want your children to comply with a request and they won’t budge. When this happens, we need to change the way our adult mind thinks and switch it to the way a child thinks. Instead of giving them a punitive consequence, try these play recommendations that can be used with children as young as toddlerhood all the way to adolescents! #drkimblog
