Let’s Talk About: New Year, New You, New Nutribullet

This year is off to a great start! It’s a new year and it’s a new you! And if you are like me, you have made goals this year to strive for better health. As a mom, having a healthy lifestyle is more than just for me. I want to be healthy for my children, too. But if I expect my children to learn and live a healthy lifestyle, I need to be a role model and show them what it takes to be dedicated, disciplined, and committed to better health.

As a therapist, having a healthy mind is just as important as having a healthy body. They are one in the same from my professional perspective. A healthy body is a healthy mind. And we need have balance between our mental, emotional, and physical self. According to numerous polls, exercising and eating healthy are often among the top New Year’s resolutions for people around the globe. And when you are nutritionally and physically balanced, endorphins start to run through your body, which change the chemistry in your mind, leaving you with healthier emotional and mental health.

A key word I often use in therapy is moderation. If you set your goals and expectations too extremely you will often be setting yourself up for failure. Goals need to be reasonable, achievable, and measurable. Set yourself up for success before you begin setting your goals. Start slow and work your way up to longer workouts, healthier foods, and more meditation. Balance your physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing by being mindful of your goals and expectations.

So how do you get there?

  1. Write it down
  2. Grab an Accountability Partner
  3. Start Slow
  4. Give Yourself Rewards
  5. Forgive Yourself If You Fail
  6. Try Again and Never Give Up

And even though I lead a very busy lifestyle, making time to exercise is vital to my wellbeing. And since my children are often home with me, I invite them join in, too! We walk around the neighborhood, do weights, squats, push ups, and sit ups together. We even do yoga! And even if they don’t do all the moves I do, they watch me and are soaking in how important physical fitness is to our lives!

I also teach my children healthy eating habits by the food I purchase at the store, the meals I cook, and the snacks we eat. I try not to eat anything they can’t have. I can’t expect them to eat healthy if I’m not doing the same. I love that one of our favorite things to make together are smoothies. My daughter often asks for a smoothie each morning and we make enough for her, the baby, and me! Yes, my son will even drink the smoothie, too! And although they are already big fruit eaters, smoothies are such an easy way for them to eat their veggies, too! Scroll down to the bottom of this blog for my favorite smoothie recipe!

So you can only imagine how excited we are to partner with Nutribullet this year! (AD) They sponsored this post, but all of the opinions are my own. They just released the Nutribullet Balance, which comes with a Bluetooth-Enabled Smart Nutrition Sensor. Your Nutribullet Balance syncs up with an app on your smart device via Bluetooth to provide you with nutritional information. And I’m not kidding when I tell you that the syncing process was so simple and quick. Within seconds I was able to:

-Create custom wellness goals

-Track nutritional goals with the help of a virtual nutritionist. Your personal profile matches the best recipes for your goals and specific needs

-Track daily/weekly intake of calories, protein, fat, carbs, fiber, and sugar

-Create my own recipes

-Browse hundreds of premade step-by-step recipes including smoothies, soups, dips, salad dressing, sauces, and more!

-Track the nutrition of each smoothie I make! This is my favorite feature as I am able to put the ingredients I want into the blender cup, plug in the ingredient I’m adding into the app, and the sensors on the base tracks the nutrition right onto my phone!)

It is honestly so fun to make smoothies now and the blender cups are so big you can fit all the ingredients you want and they won’t spill over! You receive two 32-ounce cups and two flip up lids so you can even take your smoothie on the go! My daughter’s favorite part is when the app on my phone will “talk to me” and tell me when the blender cup is synced or off the base. She also loves that as soon as the smoothie starts blending, we can see the countdown of when it will be done right on my phone! I personally love how you can customize the length of your blend. Each recipe has been calibrated for premium texture output, so you can drink your smoothie thick or thin!

So why is the Nutribullet different than other blenders and juicers? Nutribullet has nutrient extraction, which is a mechanism that breaks down fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds to their most absorbable state so they are easily digestible. Trust me, I’ve tried blenders and juicers before and blenders never could break down foods very well and juicers are way too messy. The Nutribulet is quick, efficient, and can be easily cleaned. Each Nutribullet Balance comes with 1 stainless steel precision extractor blade! And it breaks down anything I put in the cup within seconds and I still have all the nutrients! This is truly the evolution of blending!

Dr. Kim’s Smoothie Recipe*

½ Cup of Spinach

½ Cup of Carrots

1 banana

1 cup of frozen or fresh fruit (we often use berries, mangos, peaches, and pineapple)

¼ cup Almonds

¼ cup Walnuts

1/4 cup shredded coconut

1 tsp of flax seeds

1 tsp hemp seeds

¼ tsp of cinnamon

1 cup hemp milk

1 cup water

*Keep in mind these are all approximations as we typically eyeball our ingredients and this recipe has slight variations each time we make it! Plus when you have the Nutribullet Balance you don’t need to measure everything out, the app does it for you!

🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had t 🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had today! 🇺🇸

As soon as we woke up I started educating my children, specifically my daughter, on what the inauguration meant and why today was such a special day in history. We both were glued to the television as we watched @kamalaharris be sworn in as the first Black South Asian woman Vice President and @joebiden be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. We also were powerfully moved hearing @amandascgorman - the youngest inaugural poet in history recite “The Hill We Climb.”

My daughter was so excited to participate and recite the Pledge of Allegiance with the rest of the county and she was so proud to see and be a part of history in the making. I haven’t been to Washington D.C. in about 8 years but I promised I would take her one day when the pandemic is over.

In the meantime, I have a fun fact for you! Did you know that President Joe Biden and I both graduated from the same university? Yep! We both went to @syracuseu 🍊 And in fact, @joebiden is the first @syracuseu alumnus to become President of the United States!

And since I work from home, it can get quite noisy and distracting with my husband and two children here, so sometimes I get my best work done in the comfort of my own bed. And the best part is that I can have my new @crane_usa “4 in 1” cool mist humidifier on at all times with essential oils to help with overall wellness and since it comes with a sound machine I can block out the other noises in the house!

And at night, it helps my sinuses as I sleep, especially when the dry air of the heater is on, and it has a nightlight so my kids can see where they are going in the middle of the night when they inevitably need water or a hug!

This is our 6th #cranehumidifier style and it’s my favorite one yet! Check out my stories for a closer look! 👀 #happyhealthyhumidity

{New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude {New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude” 🌱✨🌸

Throwing it back to one of the first mommy and me photos I ever posted on my feed because I’ve been teaching my daughter about gratitude since she was this little, possibly even younger (she is two here for reference)!

Gratitude is such an important virtue and must have trait to build a child’s character. It also shows therapeutic benefits when you show gratitude to others, so why wouldn’t you want to make it a priority to teach and instill in your children?

In this blog, I have suggestions for how to teach children gratitude broken down by ages and stages from infancy to teenage years, while also including some conversation prompts, and links to my favorite gratitude journals for busy families that we use here at home!

Find the direct link to read in my bio and stories! I also published similar articles on @todayparents and @redtricycle if you follow me there! #drkimblog
DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️ I am DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️

I am that mom who wants to do it all and when I get overwhelmed or start suffering from a major case of burnout, I feel guilty if I take a break instead of giving my body and mind permission to slow down or even stop.

As moms we often feel guilty if we take a break or believe we are perceived as weak if we ask for help. I have learned that the more I ask for help and the more time I take for myself, the better I am for my children.

Guilt is an emotional response to something you perceived you did wrong, but when you experience unnecessary guilt, it’s counterproductive to healing and helping you with what you need most. So give it a try and let me know how you are going to take a break and not feel guilty about it this week below in the comments! ⤵️ #drkimparentingtips #theparentologist #drkimparentingadvice

For the last 3 years I have spent my career therapeutically helping families and children of all ages on the Autism Spectrum. Play has been a fundamental way for many of my clients to communicate if they are non-verbal. And some of my clients have had to be taught how to play with a toy or another person. The play ideas listed on the blog can be used with children with or without special needs. Play is a universal way a child can explore their world in a way that makes sense to them and cultivate imagination, creativity, and fun! As a Registered Play Therapist, I love the work I do and couldn’t be prouder of the progress my clients have made with play over the years! #drkimblog

As a Registered Play Therapist, play is the foundation to the way I help children conceptualize and conquer the world. Play is second nature to children and the way they respond to many of life’s obstacles. Sometimes as parents, it is easy to get into a power match with your children, especially when you want your children to comply with a request and they won’t budge. When this happens, we need to change the way our adult mind thinks and switch it to the way a child thinks. Instead of giving them a punitive consequence, try these play recommendations that can be used with children as young as toddlerhood all the way to adolescents! #drkimblog
