Let’s Talk About: My Responsibilities as a Mom & The Lessons I Want To Teach My Daughter

GIVEAWAY + DISCOUNT CODE AT BOTTOM OF BLOG!

As a mom, I believe it is one of my responsibilities to teach my daughter that she is always enough. I have written multiple thesis papers and have completed numerous research studies on positive body image and have had plenty of clients that have suffered from negative self worth. I know how easily it can be shattered. I know how deeply it can destroy someone. I know how detrimental it can feel. Despite the influences from peers, media, and society, I want my daughter to always have a positive self image and love who she is on the outside and on the inside. A negative body image and overall self image plagues so many little girls, I’d like to ingrain her positive attributes at an early age and focus on her feeling good about herself, on the good days and the challenging days. I don’t want her social self to dominate her worth. I want her to develop a core self that won’t falter despite what the world throws her way.

As a mom, I believe it is one of my responsibilities to teach my daughter how to play and have fun. As a registered play therapist, I want her to use her imagination, role-play, and be whoever her heart desires in any given moment. Play is beneficial at all ages and I love to play with her while I still can. Right now I am still her best friend and her playmate so when she says “let’s play dress up and have a fairy princess tea party” I say “YES!!!” Plus it allows me to wear some of my old bridesmaids dresses that are in the back of my closet and create a new use for them!

As a mom, I believe it is one of my responsibilities to teach my daughter how to sparkle, shine, and glow brightly throughout her entire life. If you haven’t yet heard, there is a mom-owned beauty brand that just launched called Petite ‘n Pretty that is leading the Sparkle Revolution! Their age appropriate and pediatrician approved beauty line is redefining pretty and is helping young people glow all over the world. They believe that pretty is a feeling that goes beyond outside appearance. A company after my own heart, behind their high quality beauty products, the brand aims to empower, encourage, and embrace creativity, and most importantly to always have fun!!! My daughter and I had so much fun having an experiential play date using all of the products and taking turns putting them on each other!!

As a clinician, I also work with autistic children and adolescents and I love that this brand thoughtfully included an occupational therapist on their board of advisors who offered influence as to how the products were shaped based on motor skill availability and sensory challenges! This company isn’t just a pretty face. This brand isn’t just about beauty being skin deep. It is a brand of integrity, thoughtfulness, and values scoping beyond just looking pretty on the outside. Although, being pretty and feeling pretty on the outside can be celebrated, too – especially when you have beauty enhancers that include glitter!

I love that the products are Paraben-free and Phthalate Free. They are also nut-free and gluten-free so they are safe not only for my daughter to use for imaginary play, but also safe if she were to ever take them to show and tell at school and or wear a little sparkle at her dance recital. Being a conscientious mom means making sure that she is aware of others’ allergies as well as her own. The company also comply with all the FDA regulations you should expect, and also Prop 65, and the Oregon State Child Safety Act as well. The products are even cruelty free and have never been tested on animals.

Safety is the expectation, never the exception! – Petite ‘n Pretty

Here is the skinny on each of their products:

Gen Glitter: Sparkly hair and body glitter that you can put anywhere on your body to make it shine! Coming in three different shades, this pretty gel-like formula is so fun to use with its own applicator that practically paints your skin! It is water based and made without alcohol. The best part is that is washes off easily with soap and water!

9021 – Glow! Eye and Cheek Palette: This eye and cheek palate includes six eye shadows, a blush, and a highlighter that range from sparkles, shines, and mattes. It is made of milled mica and is a talc-free formula that washes off easily after use! The set also comes with a dual ended contour brush – one side for your eyes and one side for your cheeks!

9021-Glow! Cheek and Highlighter Duo:  A shimmering highlighter and sun-kissed bronzer pair up in a compact duo for light-catching looks all year long!

Dual-Ended Contour Brush 2D – A custom, petite-sized makeup brush with an angled tip for blush and bronzer shades and a domed end for the finishing touch of highlight. Don’t worry it’s vegan!

10K Shine Lip Gloss: Be a real GLOSS BOSS with this new glittery  shine on your lips! This glittery and shiny gloss comes in 4 different colors. The gloss is lightweight and not sticky because it is created with oils and waxes and nourish lips with its Vitamin E! They smell so good too! They are made with a signature Cloud-Mine flavor that tastes like Blueberry, Plum, Cotton Candy, Rose Wood, and Strawberry Jam.

We even got a sheet of stickers that my daughter loved!!!!

All products are recommended for ages 5+ and adult supervision is also recommended.

Now is the perfect time to purchase beauty products for back to school, because school isn’t just for learning academics. It is a time of social and emotional exploration, play, and having fun! Use my code parentologist20  for 20% off your order site wide, valid until September 30th!

🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had t 🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had today! 🇺🇸

As soon as we woke up I started educating my children, specifically my daughter, on what the inauguration meant and why today was such a special day in history. We both were glued to the television as we watched @kamalaharris be sworn in as the first Black South Asian woman Vice President and @joebiden be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. We also were powerfully moved hearing @amandascgorman - the youngest inaugural poet in history recite “The Hill We Climb.”

My daughter was so excited to participate and recite the Pledge of Allegiance with the rest of the county and she was so proud to see and be a part of history in the making. I haven’t been to Washington D.C. in about 8 years but I promised I would take her one day when the pandemic is over.

In the meantime, I have a fun fact for you! Did you know that President Joe Biden and I both graduated from the same university? Yep! We both went to @syracuseu 🍊 And in fact, @joebiden is the first @syracuseu alumnus to become President of the United States!

And since I work from home, it can get quite noisy and distracting with my husband and two children here, so sometimes I get my best work done in the comfort of my own bed. And the best part is that I can have my new @crane_usa “4 in 1” cool mist humidifier on at all times with essential oils to help with overall wellness and since it comes with a sound machine I can block out the other noises in the house!

And at night, it helps my sinuses as I sleep, especially when the dry air of the heater is on, and it has a nightlight so my kids can see where they are going in the middle of the night when they inevitably need water or a hug!

This is our 6th #cranehumidifier style and it’s my favorite one yet! Check out my stories for a closer look! 👀 #happyhealthyhumidity

{New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude {New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude” 🌱✨🌸

Throwing it back to one of the first mommy and me photos I ever posted on my feed because I’ve been teaching my daughter about gratitude since she was this little, possibly even younger (she is two here for reference)!

Gratitude is such an important virtue and must have trait to build a child’s character. It also shows therapeutic benefits when you show gratitude to others, so why wouldn’t you want to make it a priority to teach and instill in your children?

In this blog, I have suggestions for how to teach children gratitude broken down by ages and stages from infancy to teenage years, while also including some conversation prompts, and links to my favorite gratitude journals for busy families that we use here at home!

Find the direct link to read in my bio and stories! I also published similar articles on @todayparents and @redtricycle if you follow me there! #drkimblog
DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️ I am DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️

I am that mom who wants to do it all and when I get overwhelmed or start suffering from a major case of burnout, I feel guilty if I take a break instead of giving my body and mind permission to slow down or even stop.

As moms we often feel guilty if we take a break or believe we are perceived as weak if we ask for help. I have learned that the more I ask for help and the more time I take for myself, the better I am for my children.

Guilt is an emotional response to something you perceived you did wrong, but when you experience unnecessary guilt, it’s counterproductive to healing and helping you with what you need most. So give it a try and let me know how you are going to take a break and not feel guilty about it this week below in the comments! ⤵️ #drkimparentingtips #theparentologist #drkimparentingadvice

For the last 3 years I have spent my career therapeutically helping families and children of all ages on the Autism Spectrum. Play has been a fundamental way for many of my clients to communicate if they are non-verbal. And some of my clients have had to be taught how to play with a toy or another person. The play ideas listed on the blog can be used with children with or without special needs. Play is a universal way a child can explore their world in a way that makes sense to them and cultivate imagination, creativity, and fun! As a Registered Play Therapist, I love the work I do and couldn’t be prouder of the progress my clients have made with play over the years! #drkimblog

As a Registered Play Therapist, play is the foundation to the way I help children conceptualize and conquer the world. Play is second nature to children and the way they respond to many of life’s obstacles. Sometimes as parents, it is easy to get into a power match with your children, especially when you want your children to comply with a request and they won’t budge. When this happens, we need to change the way our adult mind thinks and switch it to the way a child thinks. Instead of giving them a punitive consequence, try these play recommendations that can be used with children as young as toddlerhood all the way to adolescents! #drkimblog
