In the past we have admired Hollywood movie and television stars. We have put these celebrities on a pedestal and have looked up to them in a sort of dream-like fashion. We have fallen in love with the characters they play on the big screen and wonder what they are like in “real” life. They have always been a bit unattainable and that made them more intriguing. We have read and subscribed to tabloid magazines so we can see who they are dating, where they are living, and what kind of groceries they are buying. They are just like us, right?
In recent years, a new kind of celebrity graced our television screens. The reality TV star became the new Hollywood celebrity. We have been watching popular and engaging reality television programming for decades and are introduced to new people each season that we grow to know and love as if they were one of us. The funny thing is that they are one of us. Reality TV stars are real people playing out their real personality in a real life situation. It seems with the explosion of cable television, that anyone and everyone has the opportunity to become a reality TV star.
Then came YouTube. People that didn’t or couldn’t be on network or cable television had their own vision to become their own celebrity on the internet via places like YouTube. Some online celebrities have millions of views each day and multiple videos that have gone viral. They are online sensations. These folks can also make a full time living off of doing what they love; entertaining!
Now, it’s the mom blogger’s turn. Mom bloggers are the new celebrities of Instagram. Some mom bloggers have tens of thousands of followers on social media and or subscribers on their blogs and continue to grow. Some mom bloggers are so successful they can make a full time living and a healthy income from blogging and posting. Wouldn’t it be nice to have so many followers and subscribers that you are asked to go on vacation for free so you can promote the hotel on your blog because you have such influence with others? Instagram is a place where every mom blogger can be a celebrity and every child can be a model. Small shops will post multiple times a year looking for brand reps and enthusiasts to promote their products and guess what, it works! Moms will submit pictures of their little ones in hopes that they will be chosen to promote the shop’s spring or summer line. These children are models in their own right and receive perks like free clothing and or deep discounts for items in the shop! I personally love to support small shops and would love to become a brand rep for a few of my favorite shops. It’s an opportunity open to everyone and allows children to have their own fifteen minutes of fame without having to sign a long and binding contract with a modeling agency.
The world of mom blogging is an intriguing one. Think about why you follow certain people on Instagram. What makes you read certain blogs? What stands out to you? Is there something intriguing about their life that you want to aspire to? Maybe they remind you of yourself and your own life? Maybe watching their lives is an escape from the daily lull of your own? Do you get good ideas and are educated from the resources they offer? It seems, for me, the more I feel like I know that person and they are my “friend” the more I want to be immersed in their daily life. The more “real” life gets and the more intense the conversation topic, the more compelling that person and or that blog becomes. I like learning from other moms, relating to other moms, and sharing with other moms. We start following other mom’s lives because we are curious, we are compelled, and we feel connected. There is nothing that I love more than bonding and connecting with other women and especially other moms. What is better than to connect with other moms that we have commonalities with? We are all moms and have a special sort of bond because we all have children. Being a mom is like being accepted into a special club that only other moms understand. And I love nothing more than being a mom. And I have to admit, being a mom blogger is one of the best jobs I could have ever created for myself.
I, personally, have been fascinated by various mom bloggers and starting next week I am going to be highlighting one mom blogger each month on my blog. I am calling the segment “Behind the Blog: The Inside Look at Successful Mom Bloggers.” The hashtag I created to go along with the segment is #behindthemomblog so you can easily find each month’s story. Each month, you will be able to get an inside look to how these women started blogging, advice they have for new bloggers, what they love about parenting, and their own advice to other parents. I have interviewed multiple moms so far and have met some amazing women that I can’t wait for you to get to know better.
And if you subscribe to my monthly newsletter, I will be highlighting an exclusive part of the interview each month to go along with that month’s segment. It has been so much fun putting this together for you, I really hope you enjoy it!
