Let’s Talk About: How to Utilize Play for Positive Behavior and A Peaceful Home

I have always loved being a public speaker. When I was a senior in high school I used to work for The San Diego County Office of Education and other platforms presenting at school assemblies for students K-12 on a variety of topics including drug and alcohol prevention, eating disorders, and more. As I grew older I did other public speaking and eventually received my first Master’s in TV Broadcasting and eventually became a university professor. I love being in front of an audience and educating as many people as I can. I know speaking in front of a large audience isn’t everyone’s thing, but it’s my passion. The more people, the better! My commencement speech was given in front of 1000’s of people and was my favorite speech to date! So it only seemed natural that I would be doing television appearances, speaking at conferences, and conducting parenting workshops once I started my brand.

I have put on various workshops over the years, but the one I just conducted titled How to Utilize Play for Positive Behavior and A Peaceful Home was my biggest one yet and I couldn’t be more thrilled! And this was the first workshop where I invited children to attend as well as their caregivers so we had infants to grandparents in the room and all ages in between and it was wonderful! I couldn’t have been more ecstatic that the room was filled with children and caregivers of all ages! We had about 30 people total and it was the perfect size!

In this experiential workshop they learned practical play techniques and positive behavior support interventions for all ages. They learned play based activities you can do to encourage self regulation, sensory play, social emotional skills, positive behavior, eating food, and more! We also discussed limit setting and how to get children to listen and comply to your requests, and how they can ultimitely have a more peaceful home!

And best of all we had fun!!! We played with PlayDoh, puppets, and food and even had a huge snow ball fight to teach parents and caregivers to let go of inhibitions when they play. Everyone was involved and it was my favorite part of the workshop!! You can see the video of it on Instagram here!

The event was held at Babies in Bloom, a family-owned business dedicated to the education and support of growing families, in Vista, California. I have known the owner of this birth center and baby boutique for years as she first started as my lactation consultant when my daughter was 6-months old and then became a friend and colleague when I starting speaking at their annual BabyFest, which is coming up on April 28th at the Westin Carlsbad Report and Spa! In addition to the birth center and baby boutique, they also offer classes and hold other events like Hypnobabies, Baby & Me Barre, Baby Signing, Prenatal Yoga, Toddler & Me Yoga, and basics on baby wearing, cloth diapering and more! You can check out all of their classes and events calendar here! I am so grateful for my continued partnership with Babies and Bloom and Rochelle. If you are in the area, please stop by and say hello! Tell them I sent you!

The workshop was sponsored by one of my most favorite companies I have ever worked with called North States. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you are probably familiar with them and their products. If you aren’t familiar, they are the leading safety gate manufacture with one mission in mind – keeping children safe. They make baby gates, play yards, and play mats and we have owned multiple types of each of their products over the years and have loved all of them! And right now you can use the code DRKIM20 for anything on their site!!!

Let’s first talk about the Light The Way Gate that we currently own and use at the top of our stairs. I love it because it’s safe and sturdy, it stays in a closed locked position or an open unlocked position with an automatic close with the touch of your hand, and it even lights up in the dark! Plus it has an extra wide opening so I can easily get through with a laundry basket or something with my babe on my hip! And it isn’t an eyesore like other gates we have owned in the past. It’s stylish and easily fits in to our home decor. You can read my moving and safety tips as well as a full review of the gate here! And you can check out all of the baby gates they offer here!

We also own their SuperYard ColorPlay Ultimate, which we keep outside in the backyard and take with us on road trips! You can read my household safety tips and full review of the play yard here!

We also own their Superyard® 3-in-1 Extra-Wide Gated Wood Barrier, which we use on the daily at home in our living room. I swear to you that I can’t live without it and wish every parent had one just  as they do a stroller, crib, and high chair. I love that you can position the panels in 3 different ways: as a barrier around the fireplace, as a portable play yard, or as a 151 inch barrier that can act as an extra wide gate anywhere in your home to keep your child safety in one room. You can read my toddler safety tips and a full review of the play yard here! And you can shop all of their play yards here!

Lastly, we own their new Folding ABC Play Mat that can be used alone or under your play yard! I love that the play mat is play mat is cushioned, colorful, educational, easy to clean, easy to fold up and take on the go, is made of PE Foam and is hypoallergenic, BPA FREE, and non-toxic. You can read my blog on How To Play When You are a Tired, Overworked, and Overwhelmed Parent and a full review of the play mat here!

In January 2018, I proudly guest blogged for North States on the topic of THE BENEFITS OF COLOR AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT that you can read about here! And in July 2018, I guest blogged again on the topic of WAYS TO PREVENTATIVELY TEACH YOUR INFANTS AND TODDLERS ABOUT SAFETY that you can read about here!

Refreshments at the event were provided by wanu water and This Bar Saves Lives. These are two of my favorite brands and apparently everyone else felt the same way because there was nothing left by the end of the workshop!! But that makes my heart happy that everyone in the room enjoyed themselves and were nourished, too!
This Bar Saves Lives makes delicious and nutritious bars save the lives of children all over the world. For each bar you purchase, their non-profit partner makes a life-saving packet of food and that food is sent to where it’s needed most. Every 150 nutrient packets saves one child! And so far, the company has donated over 10 million packets! I love these bars because not only do they taste good, they are gluten-free and made with the finest ingredients.  They have so many flavors to choose from and are available at most Starbucks and Targets nationwide!
wanu water provided 3 different types of their water: Peach Passion, Kiwi Cucumber, and Watermelon Raspberry. wanu water is short for WAter+NUtrition, and is the first ever, nutrient infused water on the market! Located in sunny Southern California, like me, each bottle is packed with antioxidants and contains 12 essential vitamins and nutrients! Each bottle contains Vitamins C, E, A, K, B1, B3, B5, B6, B12, Biotin, Folic Acid, and Fiber! All of the B Vitamins are so important to me because I am not a caffeine drinker and B Vitamins provide natural energy for me to get through my day! Each bottle of wanu water contains 6 grams of NON-GMO fiber, which is 24% of your daily recommended intake, which is also comparable to two bananas! And, if you didn’t already know, fiber is so important to normalize and maintain your digestive system and help control your blood sugar levels. Each bottle is only 5-10 calories per serving and 0, yes zero, grams of sugar! They use monk fruit and stevia to create the naturally sweetened water, which I love because they contain no artificial sweeteners. And for all the mamas like me that are gluten free, wanu water is not only gluten free but also vegan! And since I avoid BPA like the plague, I am happy to report that wanu water is packaged in BPA free bottles!
I am also so grateful to all of the brands that donated to our raffle giveaway!! In addition to North States giving away an ABC Play Mat:
Petunia Pickle Bottom gave away a Boxy backpack in Denim diaper bag. This bag has a built-in changing station, 5 pockets on the inside and 2 pockets on the outside, magnetic closure, a grab handle, stroller straps, and a wipes case! This bag also has multiple carrying options (backpack and cross-body / shoulder). And it has an easy-to-clean coated canvas exterior and water-resistant linings! They have so many beautiful styles and patterns to choose from and they even have a Disney collection!!
LILLEbaby gave away a Disney baby carrier. LILLEbaby carriers can hold babies from 7 pounds up to 45 pounds and have 6 carrying positions. When I wear my LILLEbaby Disney Baby carrier around the parks I get so many compliments. The designs you can choose from are so cute and you can even get matching doll ones for your minis! And my son loves it. He loves feeling close to me and snug in his carrier. Their carriers are durable and lightweight and are so comfortable to wear. I know my son is safe and he never feels too heavy when I’m wearing him. My back and shoulders are supported and they are breathable and my son and I don’t get too hot when I’m wearing him. When picking your carrier, you can choose between the All Seasons, with a zippered front panel to open or close based on temperature or the Airflow with 3D breathable mesh. They take Disney style to a whole other level!!
Crane gave away a Fox cool mist humidifier. We own 4 Crane cool mist humidifiers and absolutely love them (see below). The brand has over two dozen different ones you can choose from in all sorts of colors and adorable styles. The cool mist helps relieve congestion and is safe to use for newborns, infants, and children. The one gallon tank can run up to 24 hours, so we keep it on all day during nap, play, and throughout the night! They effectively humidify rooms up to 500 square feet and they are so easy to take apart, clean, and put back together. And they are so quiet you cannot even tell they’re on, so thank goodness as a busy mom there is an auto off function that activates when the water tank is empty! The base is made with antimicrobial material to help reduce mold and bacteria growth up to 99.96%, but please make sure to disinfect your humidifier once a week with water and vinegar. We use them every time illness strikes to help keep my kids breathing well and sleeping through the night. It also will help relieve cough, cold, and flu symptoms as well as nasal congestion, dry coughs, sinus irritation, nosebleeds, and dry skin and hair! The humidifiers are all FDA registered and BPA free and also come with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty.
Cuddle + Kind gave away a Avery lamb doll. This family owned company has created 24 adorable dolls that help keep children feel loved and secure (each with its own birthday and personality along with a favorite quote, but for every ethically produced, hand-knit doll sold, they give 10 meals to hungry children around the world. (1 doll = 10 meals) So far they have been able to give over 7,697,219 meals in less than three years but their goal is to give over 1 million meals! cuddle+kind has partnerships with several respected humanitarian agencies including World Food Program USA, Children’s Hunger Fund, Breakfast Club of Canada and WE Charity to guarantee that every purchase directly benefits children in need.
And Smart Noggin Toys gave away some NogginStik® Developmental Light-up Rattles!! Designed for babies 0-12 months old to encourage early milestones, this rattle has many benefits. It’s a learning toy that helps sensory driven fun while developing motor skills! It has red, green, and blue lights to encourage visual tracking skills, a soft rattle sound to encourage auditory skills, an easy to hold handle for mastering grasping, and fun textures to delight the sense of touch. We bought one for our daughter 6 years ago and then bought one for our son when we was born. And honestly both of my children still love to play with them and they are years above the recommended age!! I believe every parent should have one for their baby!
And we can’t forget about the curated gift baskets from Plum + Sparrow! We have had a few different baskets from this amazing family owned brand (who also just happens to be local) and I knew I had to have their pint baskets at the event!!
Their baskets are made by an amazing group of weavers in a village in Africa and I love how each one is just a little different than one another! I also love that they are a supporter of the Fair Trade Federation which means 10% of each purchase goes back to the African weavers and their families – providing them with school supplies, healthcare and the funding and building of the community weaving centers. On their website you can find Moses baskets, changing baskets, shopping baskets, and other baskets of all sizes – even ones for dolls!
Each basket was filled with some of my favorite hand picked items like travel ointment from Tubby Todd! I have worked with Tubby Todd for years now and I love everything about this company. The owner, her employees, her products, I’m talking everything!
They generously gave everyone who received a gift basket a best selling product – their All Over Ointment – which I have used for years for my sensitive skin and eczema! It’s also used to soothe rough patches, cradle cap, burns, cuts, scrapes, and diaper rash! Tubby Todd is known for their natural skin products. They also have travel kits, multiple bundles, lotion, hair and body wash, bubble bath, belly balm, bath bombs, nursing salve, lip balm, chest rub, and more for mamas and babies! And my new favorite product is their 50 SPF mineral sunscreen called “Play” – which as a play therapist, is my favorite name for a product!
Each basket also had a chapstick from Crane, a bar from This Bar Saves Lives, a water from Wanu, finger puppets, a sensory ball, reinforcement stickers, and a custom mug!!

And a very special thank you to my co-workers, Bobby, Kennedi, Torry, and Ashleigh for coming to my workshop to learn, help, and support me!

If you want to see this workshop again, you can come see me at the Pinner’s Conference in Ontario, CA on Friday, March 8th at 6:30pm. Use DRKIM for 10% off your ticket!!! And tickets range from $17-44 with my discount depending on what tier ticket you buy!

🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had t 🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had today! 🇺🇸

As soon as we woke up I started educating my children, specifically my daughter, on what the inauguration meant and why today was such a special day in history. We both were glued to the television as we watched @kamalaharris be sworn in as the first Black South Asian woman Vice President and @joebiden be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. We also were powerfully moved hearing @amandascgorman - the youngest inaugural poet in history recite “The Hill We Climb.”

My daughter was so excited to participate and recite the Pledge of Allegiance with the rest of the county and she was so proud to see and be a part of history in the making. I haven’t been to Washington D.C. in about 8 years but I promised I would take her one day when the pandemic is over.

In the meantime, I have a fun fact for you! Did you know that President Joe Biden and I both graduated from the same university? Yep! We both went to @syracuseu 🍊 And in fact, @joebiden is the first @syracuseu alumnus to become President of the United States!

And since I work from home, it can get quite noisy and distracting with my husband and two children here, so sometimes I get my best work done in the comfort of my own bed. And the best part is that I can have my new @crane_usa “4 in 1” cool mist humidifier on at all times with essential oils to help with overall wellness and since it comes with a sound machine I can block out the other noises in the house!

And at night, it helps my sinuses as I sleep, especially when the dry air of the heater is on, and it has a nightlight so my kids can see where they are going in the middle of the night when they inevitably need water or a hug!

This is our 6th #cranehumidifier style and it’s my favorite one yet! Check out my stories for a closer look! 👀 #happyhealthyhumidity

{New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude {New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude” 🌱✨🌸

Throwing it back to one of the first mommy and me photos I ever posted on my feed because I’ve been teaching my daughter about gratitude since she was this little, possibly even younger (she is two here for reference)!

Gratitude is such an important virtue and must have trait to build a child’s character. It also shows therapeutic benefits when you show gratitude to others, so why wouldn’t you want to make it a priority to teach and instill in your children?

In this blog, I have suggestions for how to teach children gratitude broken down by ages and stages from infancy to teenage years, while also including some conversation prompts, and links to my favorite gratitude journals for busy families that we use here at home!

Find the direct link to read in my bio and stories! I also published similar articles on @todayparents and @redtricycle if you follow me there! #drkimblog
DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️ I am DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️

I am that mom who wants to do it all and when I get overwhelmed or start suffering from a major case of burnout, I feel guilty if I take a break instead of giving my body and mind permission to slow down or even stop.

As moms we often feel guilty if we take a break or believe we are perceived as weak if we ask for help. I have learned that the more I ask for help and the more time I take for myself, the better I am for my children.

Guilt is an emotional response to something you perceived you did wrong, but when you experience unnecessary guilt, it’s counterproductive to healing and helping you with what you need most. So give it a try and let me know how you are going to take a break and not feel guilty about it this week below in the comments! ⤵️ #drkimparentingtips #theparentologist #drkimparentingadvice

For the last 3 years I have spent my career therapeutically helping families and children of all ages on the Autism Spectrum. Play has been a fundamental way for many of my clients to communicate if they are non-verbal. And some of my clients have had to be taught how to play with a toy or another person. The play ideas listed on the blog can be used with children with or without special needs. Play is a universal way a child can explore their world in a way that makes sense to them and cultivate imagination, creativity, and fun! As a Registered Play Therapist, I love the work I do and couldn’t be prouder of the progress my clients have made with play over the years! #drkimblog

As a Registered Play Therapist, play is the foundation to the way I help children conceptualize and conquer the world. Play is second nature to children and the way they respond to many of life’s obstacles. Sometimes as parents, it is easy to get into a power match with your children, especially when you want your children to comply with a request and they won’t budge. When this happens, we need to change the way our adult mind thinks and switch it to the way a child thinks. Instead of giving them a punitive consequence, try these play recommendations that can be used with children as young as toddlerhood all the way to adolescents! #drkimblog
