Let’s Talk About: Babywearing Benefits and Safety Tips & Solly Baby Wrap

I unfortunately didn’t do much babywearing with my first baby and it was something I regretted so when I became pregnant with my second baby it was a priority for me to have a baby wrap for him from birth. The fourth trimester is a time for mom and baby to be physically close, which also enhances emotional growth and closeness. Wearing your baby as much as possible during the first three months of his or her life outside of the womb has tremendous attachment benefits. Wraps are the most womb like environment for your baby and will make them feel content and safe.

Wearing your baby has so many benefits. For me, I love being hands free while also holding my baby close. My baby likes it, too, and sometimes will only soothe when I’m carrying him. If you are a mom of multiple children like I am, being able to wear your baby while doing something else with your toddler or other children is key to multi-tasking. You can even nurse your baby while wearing him or her in a wrap! Wearing your baby even allows you to do things like hike, ride on an airplane while holding your baby, or walk around an amusement park all day without the inconvenience of a stroller. We have annual passes to places like the Zoo and Disneyland and one main reason I wanted a wrap was to wear my baby while I tend to my toddler in public places. Being able to wear my baby allows me to be hands free while going on rides, eating, and holding my daughter’s hand or pushing her in the stroller between rides. Besides the convenience, babywearing also supports breastfeeding, and there have also been studies that have shown that babies who are carried cry less and can also regulate their physiological functioning better than babies that aren’t carried.

There are so many brands you can choose from but my wrap of choice is a Solly Baby wrap. I love my Solly Baby and keep my wrap in my diaper bag at all times and take it with me wherever I go. My Solly Baby is more than a wrap, it is a way that I can be close to my baby as we make life lasting memories on all of our adventures during the first year of his life. It is so easy to use and travel with. In the last three weeks of my baby boy’s life, I have worn my wrap almost everyday and have been complimented about my wrap by friends and strangers alike. I wear my baby around the house and since I also lead a very active lifestyle going to events, church, book club, as well as my daughter’s dance class and preschool and I can easily wear him at all of these places! Plus it’s a way to protect him from germs and unwanted hands from touching or holding him. I can’t count how many times I have been asked by others what it is and where they can get one. If you want one, you can shop here http://sollybaby.com There are over 17 colors and patterns to choose from that are perfect for the little girl or boy in your life. There are many neutral colors and versatile colors for every personality and that are masculine enough for men to wear, too! I personally own the BALTIC color (blue) you can shop here http://shop.sollybaby.com/collections/fw16/products/baltic

Solly Baby wrap was founded in 2011 by Elle Rowley, an entrepreneur extraordinaire and a mom of four. In fact, we both just gave birth within a week or so of each other last month! I also love that Solly Baby wrap is based in my hometown of San Diego, even though the first Solly Baby was made in Salt Lake City after Elle’s baby Solomon was born (hence the name Solly Baby). What is even more heartwarming and important to me as a consumer and mom is that Solly Baby is a family business and Elle is a very hands on creator and owner.

The Solly Baby wraps are designed for baby’s first year of life, and or up to 25 pounds. The wraps are made in the USA and made of 100% Lenzing Modal Botanic Fibers. I love that the Solly Baby wrap is light and airy to keep baby at a cool temperature, which is beneficial all year long. Plus Solly Baby wraps are so incredibly soft against mom’s and baby’s skin – I love how it feels! And when you are ready to wash, just throw it in the washing machine with your other baby laundry. Each Solly Baby is one size fits all and you can even get FREE SHIPPING in the USA and a $10 flat fee for International Shipping. Plus, $1 of EVERY wrap purchased helps make a safe birth for a mother around the world in association with their Every Mother Counts campaign. To learn more about this non profit organization, click here http://sollybaby.com/every-mother-counts/

Each Solly Baby wrap comes with step by step booklet with instructions on how to properly tie and wrap your baby. If you need more help, there are very informative tutorials on the Solly Baby website here http://sollybaby.com/information/#tutorials There is even a tutorial on how to breastfeed your baby while he or she is in the wrap! And did you know that Solly Baby also sells swaddle sets (two included per set) and Solly Dolly’s – wraps for dolls so your mini me can twin with you around town!

Here are some tips for safe baby wearing:

  1. Use the T.I.C.K.S. Rule – T: Tight, I: In View at All Times, C: Close Enough to Kiss, K: Keep Chin off the Chest and S: Supported Back. Babies, especially newborns, have a real threat of suffocation, so always keep these tips in mind for the safety of your child. Follow all of the directions for the correct way to wrap your baby and how your baby should be facing.
  2. Do not drive with your baby wrapped
  3. Do not cook with your baby wrapped
  4. Do not drink hot liquids (coffee, tea, soup) when you are wearing your baby
  5. If you need to pick something up, bend at the knee and do not bend over forward. I also suggest holding your baby’s head for extra security whenever you are not sitting or standing straight.

🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had t 🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had today! 🇺🇸

As soon as we woke up I started educating my children, specifically my daughter, on what the inauguration meant and why today was such a special day in history. We both were glued to the television as we watched @kamalaharris be sworn in as the first Black South Asian woman Vice President and @joebiden be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. We also were powerfully moved hearing @amandascgorman - the youngest inaugural poet in history recite “The Hill We Climb.”

My daughter was so excited to participate and recite the Pledge of Allegiance with the rest of the county and she was so proud to see and be a part of history in the making. I haven’t been to Washington D.C. in about 8 years but I promised I would take her one day when the pandemic is over.

In the meantime, I have a fun fact for you! Did you know that President Joe Biden and I both graduated from the same university? Yep! We both went to @syracuseu 🍊 And in fact, @joebiden is the first @syracuseu alumnus to become President of the United States!

And since I work from home, it can get quite noisy and distracting with my husband and two children here, so sometimes I get my best work done in the comfort of my own bed. And the best part is that I can have my new @crane_usa “4 in 1” cool mist humidifier on at all times with essential oils to help with overall wellness and since it comes with a sound machine I can block out the other noises in the house!

And at night, it helps my sinuses as I sleep, especially when the dry air of the heater is on, and it has a nightlight so my kids can see where they are going in the middle of the night when they inevitably need water or a hug!

This is our 6th #cranehumidifier style and it’s my favorite one yet! Check out my stories for a closer look! 👀 #happyhealthyhumidity

{New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude {New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude” 🌱✨🌸

Throwing it back to one of the first mommy and me photos I ever posted on my feed because I’ve been teaching my daughter about gratitude since she was this little, possibly even younger (she is two here for reference)!

Gratitude is such an important virtue and must have trait to build a child’s character. It also shows therapeutic benefits when you show gratitude to others, so why wouldn’t you want to make it a priority to teach and instill in your children?

In this blog, I have suggestions for how to teach children gratitude broken down by ages and stages from infancy to teenage years, while also including some conversation prompts, and links to my favorite gratitude journals for busy families that we use here at home!

Find the direct link to read in my bio and stories! I also published similar articles on @todayparents and @redtricycle if you follow me there! #drkimblog
DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️ I am DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️

I am that mom who wants to do it all and when I get overwhelmed or start suffering from a major case of burnout, I feel guilty if I take a break instead of giving my body and mind permission to slow down or even stop.

As moms we often feel guilty if we take a break or believe we are perceived as weak if we ask for help. I have learned that the more I ask for help and the more time I take for myself, the better I am for my children.

Guilt is an emotional response to something you perceived you did wrong, but when you experience unnecessary guilt, it’s counterproductive to healing and helping you with what you need most. So give it a try and let me know how you are going to take a break and not feel guilty about it this week below in the comments! ⤵️ #drkimparentingtips #theparentologist #drkimparentingadvice

For the last 3 years I have spent my career therapeutically helping families and children of all ages on the Autism Spectrum. Play has been a fundamental way for many of my clients to communicate if they are non-verbal. And some of my clients have had to be taught how to play with a toy or another person. The play ideas listed on the blog can be used with children with or without special needs. Play is a universal way a child can explore their world in a way that makes sense to them and cultivate imagination, creativity, and fun! As a Registered Play Therapist, I love the work I do and couldn’t be prouder of the progress my clients have made with play over the years! #drkimblog

As a Registered Play Therapist, play is the foundation to the way I help children conceptualize and conquer the world. Play is second nature to children and the way they respond to many of life’s obstacles. Sometimes as parents, it is easy to get into a power match with your children, especially when you want your children to comply with a request and they won’t budge. When this happens, we need to change the way our adult mind thinks and switch it to the way a child thinks. Instead of giving them a punitive consequence, try these play recommendations that can be used with children as young as toddlerhood all the way to adolescents! #drkimblog
