Highlights of The Year: The Best of 2021

What a year 2021 has been. It has certainly been a year of personal growth. I have learned a lot about myself this year and have made strides in improving who I am to the core. It has also been a year to focus on family, health, and gratitude. The world is still an sad, scary, uncertain, and unpredictable place, and to find calmness, happiness, and contentment in the storm has been quite a battle. This past year has also been a year of professional success. I accomplished more goals this year than as far as I can remember, and I am proud of the strides I have made in the workplace. I have been blessed to be the boss of my own company, work with some incredible brands, and also surpass my financial goals! I also wrote over 50 blog posts this year! And for the first time in my life, I am happier in my own skin than I ever have been. I compiled the highlights from 2021, but get ready, 2022 is already off to an incredible start and I cannot wait to share some BIG news with you soon!

The Parentologist Podcast

Probably one of my biggest accomplishments from the year is launching my own podcast. It was years in the making and it felt so good when that first episode finally went LIVE! I am really proud of the guests I have on and love all 25 episodes that I produced this past year.

My top two episodes included having actress, entrepreneur, author, and designer – Asoka Tano’s Ashley Eckstein – called “Bullying, Mental Health, and Following Dreams” and my favorite singer, songwriter Tristan Prettyman talking about “Motherhood and Music” on the show!

You can listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and wherever you download your favorite podcasts! And get ready, Season 3 starts on January 3rd with my favorite author of all time, Jane Green, who is a New York Times best selling author of 21 novels. Make sure to subscribe HERE!

Television Appearances

I was fortunate to be invited as an expert parenting guest on CBS 8 Morning Extra in San Diego twice this year. The topics I discussed on air were “Balancing Technology in the Lives of Generation Alpha” and “How to Emotionally and Mentally Prepare Children to Go Back to School.”

Published Articles

I was thrilled to be published in so many places this year. I am most proud of being featured in Very Well Family in an article I helped contribute to called “How To Support Mindful Eating in Kids.”

I was also ecstatic to be featured on The Disney Parks Blog in May in an article titled “Disney Creators Get Excited About The Disney Wish!”

And as a registered play therapist, you can only imagine my delight when I was published as an expert contributor for Genius of Play in an article I wrote called, “Play Ideas for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder” on sensory play, role play, and pretend play.”

And I was featured on Rookie Moms in an article called “7 Temper Tantrum Tips You Need To Know” this year.

I was also proud to be published in Joovy in an article called “Tips to Defining Your Best Life…Post-Pandemic”

And last but not least, I was interviewed by SD Voyager Magazine that was published in July called “Check Out Dr. Kim’s Story!”

Podcast Guest Appearances

This year I was a guest on 6 podcasts! I was a guest on top rated “Mommies Tell All” podcast with Bachelor reality stars Jade Roper Tolbert and Carly Waddell. The episode aired on October 28, 2021 and it’s titled “The ABC’s of Behavior.”

I was also a guest on The Whole Story Podcast with TV Journalists Heather Lake and Ashley Jacobs! The episode aired on October 17, 2021 titled “Building Better Families, Play Therapy, and Disciplining.”

I was also a guest on the Better Me with Body by Bree podcast with BreeAnna Cox! The episode aired on May 5, 2021 and is titled “How to Teach a Growth Mindset”.

I was also a guest on Mom’s Time Out podcast with Irvine Mom’s. The episode aired on October 4, 2021 titled, “Dr. Kim: Parenting and Child Development.”

And stay tuned for episodes I recorded this year that will air in 2022 from The Dude Therapist and Sass Says Podcast!

Travel Destinations

Despite some of the COVID restrictions this year, we were still very grateful to travel to many destinations this year and have some incredible family travel experiences! The biggest trip of the year was to Hawaii! We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa and that the most extraordinary time.

While we were in Hawaii, we also stayed at the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort and you can read about our trip here!

We also had an amazing luxurious staycation weekend at the Park Hyatt Aviara, Resort, Golf Club, and Spa.

During Halloween, we had a day trip to the Great Wolf Lodge!

And to kick off the holiday season, we took a road trip to Arizona and spent half the week in Flagstaff at The Little America Hotel and the second half of the week in Scottsdale at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort and Spa!

And earlier this year I celebrated the one year anniversary of the Disney Creators Celebration and cannot wait until the new Disney Wish launches in the summer of 2022!

Special Events

This year I hosted two special events with brands that I love. Earlier this year, I hosted a virtual new mom event called “My Baby and Me” with Toddleroo by North States Baby. And in December, I hosted an intimate holiday mom event called “Forks and Corks” with Toasted Corks and JuJuBe! An entire blog post will be coming soon for that event!

🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had t 🇺🇸 What a monumental day in history we had today! 🇺🇸

As soon as we woke up I started educating my children, specifically my daughter, on what the inauguration meant and why today was such a special day in history. We both were glued to the television as we watched @kamalaharris be sworn in as the first Black South Asian woman Vice President and @joebiden be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. We also were powerfully moved hearing @amandascgorman - the youngest inaugural poet in history recite “The Hill We Climb.”

My daughter was so excited to participate and recite the Pledge of Allegiance with the rest of the county and she was so proud to see and be a part of history in the making. I haven’t been to Washington D.C. in about 8 years but I promised I would take her one day when the pandemic is over.

In the meantime, I have a fun fact for you! Did you know that President Joe Biden and I both graduated from the same university? Yep! We both went to @syracuseu 🍊 And in fact, @joebiden is the first @syracuseu alumnus to become President of the United States!

And since I work from home, it can get quite noisy and distracting with my husband and two children here, so sometimes I get my best work done in the comfort of my own bed. And the best part is that I can have my new @crane_usa “4 in 1” cool mist humidifier on at all times with essential oils to help with overall wellness and since it comes with a sound machine I can block out the other noises in the house!

And at night, it helps my sinuses as I sleep, especially when the dry air of the heater is on, and it has a nightlight so my kids can see where they are going in the middle of the night when they inevitably need water or a hug!

This is our 6th #cranehumidifier style and it’s my favorite one yet! Check out my stories for a closer look! 👀 #happyhealthyhumidity

{New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude {New Blog Post} “How to Teach Children Gratitude” 🌱✨🌸

Throwing it back to one of the first mommy and me photos I ever posted on my feed because I’ve been teaching my daughter about gratitude since she was this little, possibly even younger (she is two here for reference)!

Gratitude is such an important virtue and must have trait to build a child’s character. It also shows therapeutic benefits when you show gratitude to others, so why wouldn’t you want to make it a priority to teach and instill in your children?

In this blog, I have suggestions for how to teach children gratitude broken down by ages and stages from infancy to teenage years, while also including some conversation prompts, and links to my favorite gratitude journals for busy families that we use here at home!

Find the direct link to read in my bio and stories! I also published similar articles on @todayparents and @redtricycle if you follow me there! #drkimblog
DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️ I am DOUBLE TAP if you agree!! 🙋🏼‍♀️

I am that mom who wants to do it all and when I get overwhelmed or start suffering from a major case of burnout, I feel guilty if I take a break instead of giving my body and mind permission to slow down or even stop.

As moms we often feel guilty if we take a break or believe we are perceived as weak if we ask for help. I have learned that the more I ask for help and the more time I take for myself, the better I am for my children.

Guilt is an emotional response to something you perceived you did wrong, but when you experience unnecessary guilt, it’s counterproductive to healing and helping you with what you need most. So give it a try and let me know how you are going to take a break and not feel guilty about it this week below in the comments! ⤵️ #drkimparentingtips #theparentologist #drkimparentingadvice

For the last 3 years I have spent my career therapeutically helping families and children of all ages on the Autism Spectrum. Play has been a fundamental way for many of my clients to communicate if they are non-verbal. And some of my clients have had to be taught how to play with a toy or another person. The play ideas listed on the blog can be used with children with or without special needs. Play is a universal way a child can explore their world in a way that makes sense to them and cultivate imagination, creativity, and fun! As a Registered Play Therapist, I love the work I do and couldn’t be prouder of the progress my clients have made with play over the years! #drkimblog

As a Registered Play Therapist, play is the foundation to the way I help children conceptualize and conquer the world. Play is second nature to children and the way they respond to many of life’s obstacles. Sometimes as parents, it is easy to get into a power match with your children, especially when you want your children to comply with a request and they won’t budge. When this happens, we need to change the way our adult mind thinks and switch it to the way a child thinks. Instead of giving them a punitive consequence, try these play recommendations that can be used with children as young as toddlerhood all the way to adolescents! #drkimblog
