Causes, Signs, and Solutions for Children Struggling in School

I was so excited to be invited back to FOX 5 San Diego this week to talk about How to Know if Your Child is Struggling in School. I loved being back in the studio and interviewed by Raoul Martinez. We had a great conversation! If you missed the LIVE segment, I am sharing everything I talked about on set and more!

Causes

Some of the reasons why your child might be struggling include:

  • Learning disabilities
  • Bullying
  • Adjustment to new school, new sibling, or new divorced parents
  • Diagnosis (ADHD, depression, anxiety, social anxiety)
  • Bad teacher/student combo
  • Social pressures/puberty

Warning Signs

Some of the warning signs you can look for in your child are:

  • Physiological symptoms including stomach ache, headache, sweating, body aches
  • Heightened anxiety or depression
  • Wanting to avoid school and making excuses not to go to school
  • Struggling in a various subject and taking a long time to complete assignments
  • Sudden changes in peer group/making excuses to avoid social situations
  • Sudden mood and behavior changes
  • Having trouble eating and sleeping

Solutions

Some of the things you can try to help your child are:

  • Weekly (or daily) check in with teacher via in person, email, app, etc.
  • Daily check in with child by scaling from 1-10 how their day was and how you can help
  • Be more present with homework time
  • Ask about their friends and who they ate lunch with or what they played with during recess
  • Volunteer in the school/classroom
