Have you ever met someone and knew immediately that you were meant to meet him or her? I feel this way about Jess Oakes from Positively Oakes. I deemed her my blogging and social media mentor and consider her a virtual mom friend. Jess took me in under her wing back in October when I barely had my first blog posted and had less than 50 followers on Instagram. I reached out to her because we had the same fabulous web designer, the incredibly talented Jess Kasteler from Blush Creative Studio, and I asked her if she would be willing to collaborate with me. She responded almost immediately and said yes. She made time for me and I felt, somehow, that she believed in me, and that made such a huge impact on me as a person and new blogger. I really respect that about Jess. In fact, each time I reach out to her she is more than responsive and is so delightful to work with. She is just one of those people that makes you feel special and like you are her top and only priority. I honestly don’t know how she has time for it all, she makes it look so easy. Jess is an incredible woman of character and I admire her for her work ethic, motivation, and hard work, the honesty and realness of her blogs, and the way she mothers her little baby girl.
I’m not sure how I came across the first picture on Instagram of Jess @positivelyoakes, but I began following her instantaneously because her posts were so magnetic. She had an “it” factor and she was so genuine and happy in all of her pictures. I couldn’t wait to see what she had to say and what was happening next in her life. She was pregnant at the time and following her journey to motherhood was joyful to say the least. Now she has a beautiful 10-month old daughter named Blake and watching the both of them is so fun and inspiring. Jess writes real, heartfelt blogs about life and introduces her followers to the newest and greatest products for babies and mamas! With close to 40k followers on Instagram, 2.2k followers on Pinterest, and a successful blog averaging about 30,000-40,000 page views a month, Jess at Positively Oakes is someone you have to know about and I just know after reading this interview you’ll fall in love with her and her family just as much as I did!
And did you know that Jess recently started an admirable and amazing, supportive movement called #projectigotyoback to stop cyber bulling and mom shaming? Name of Blog: Positively Oakes
How did you come up with the name? I try really hard to look at things positively and then Oakes is my last name–so ta-da!
What year did you start? I started blogging 10 years ago, but started Positively Oakes in January of 2014
What is your current state you reside? Idaho
What is something your followers don’t know about you? I would say I have a Dr. Pepper obsession…but everyone knows that. Ha! Something they don’t know about me…hmm…I put pretty much everything out there. How about, long ago I went and graduated from cosmetology school? That’s a random little fact about me!
What do you like to do in your free time/hobbies? I love spending every second I can with my family and outdoors if possible (when it’s not snowing or raining…)
Who is part of your family? I’ve been married four years to the most supportive guy, have one sweet little baby girl who is 10 months, and 2 pups!
What is most rewarding about parenting? The snuggles at the end of a long day.
What is the most challenging about parenting? Learning everything, especially as a new Mom, everything is new and it’s a learning process!
What advice do you have for new parents? Take one day at a time, remember the little things and celebrate the tiny wins!
What advice do you have for new bloggers? Patience! Patience is key. Like I said I have been blogging for years and it’s still not where I want it to be. I think once you hit one goal, you’ll have another and it will just keep going. So just be patient, enjoy the ride and give it your all 🙂
What was the most difficult part of blogging? I would say probably getting to the point where I started making a living with it. You can blog all you want, which I did, but I wanted to do it full time and as a career and that was a lot of hard work for me to make happen.
What do you love most about blogging? It’s the best release after a hard day or frustrating topic. I love to write, it’s a passion of mine, I’ve kept a journal since I was 5 and it’s a way for me to get my thoughts and words out, it does just that. Plus–I LOVE meeting all my amazing followers and becoming friends with y’all!
What is your blog primarily about? Motherhood and Lifestyle
Why did you start blogging? To make a difference, to keep things real and embrace the messy. I want every Mom, person, whatever out there to know that life isn’t perfect, but we can embrace the messy and enjoy the ride! I wanted to create a community where we can come together and be friends, support and love each other.
Has the blogging world changed since you first began? Absolutely! When I first started it was all about Blogger and the social media outlets weren’t what they are today–things have DEFINITELY changed!
What gives you your inspiration for content and photos? Oh, it differs everyday. I just spot things and am like AH that looks good! I have been known to make my husband turn around or stop while driving to take a picture…more than once. Ha!
