As a mom, I have a special place in my heart for other moms. We share a unique experience that only other moms can comprehend. We work so hard for our families, providing and sacrificing so much for our children, and exuding so much love in our hearts for the very souls we call our kids. Whether you are a working mom outside the home or a working mom inside the home, we are all moms that do what we can to keep our kids happy, safe, nourished, and loved. Personally I have done both, and both are difficult for different reasons. For most things in life, I believe balance and moderation are keys to successful living.
And now, there is a fairly new trend in motherhood called a mompreneur. According to Wikipedia, the term mompreneur is defined as a female business owner who is actively balancing the role as a mom and the role of an entrepreneur. If you are active on Instagram or shop on Etsy often, you are aware of how common and popular the term is and how many mompreneurs there are all over the world. The formula is brilliant. Be a mom + come up with a unique and quality product = make an income from home while raising your children. Some moms have told me that their hobbies have become their careers. But like any small business, there are sacrifices to be made and it’s not ideal for everyone. Like any job, there are pros and cons. But if you think this is the lifestyle for you, go for it!
I have been so fortunate to have met so many mompreneurs on social media since launching my own brand. What I love about my new virtual friend and fellow mompreneur, Melissa Desrochers, is that she invented a genius tool for children that is practical for mealtime called Pick-Ease. She says “it’s the best tool for a picky eater” and just may have found the solution for children to have fun while they eat effectively. What toddler and or school-aged child do you know that isn’t a picky eater? Haven has used them and she loves them. They come in different colors and with different designs and they are practical and fun to use. It’s essentially a child safe toothpick to help ease picking up small food items. We have found them to be especially helpful with berries and hot dogs!
Her business is booming with 13k followers on Instagram and approximately 2000 followers on Facebook! In addition to being the founder of Pick-Ease, Melissa is a daycare owner, blogger, wife, and mom of two boys. How does she do it all? You are about to find out! I hope you enjoy this Behind the Blog interview as much as I do! And make sure you are following me on Instagram @theparentologist because tomorrow we might just be giving away some Pick-Ease just for you!!!
Links to Melissa’s blog and Instagram are at the end of the interview so please make sure to check her out and follow along on her journey of motherhood and more!
Name of Blog/Brand: Pick-Ease
How did you come up with the name? Pick-Ease is the name of my product. When deciding on a name for my product, which is a kid-friendly toothpick, my husband and I were bouncing ideas off of each other. I suggested Pickies, and then he suggested “Pick-Ease”, which I immediately fell in love with.
What year did you start? I launched Pick-Ease in Aug 2014. Soon after, my marketing agency suggested I start a blog.
What is your current state you reside? Rhode Island
What is something your followers don’t know about you? Hmmm…This is a tough question. I find that the more personal you are, the easier it is for people to connect with you, so my followers actually already know all of the important parts of my life – Wife, mommy of two, cancer survivor, daycare owner, and inventor of Pick-Ease! I don’t think many people know that I met my husband on Match.com though!
What do you like to do in your free time/hobbies? I don’t really have much “free time” but I make it a point to keep weekends exclusively for my family. I work as hard as I do for my family, so I don’t think work should ever trump them. As long as I’m with my boys, whether it’s at the beach, the zoo, a museum, or flying kites, I couldn’t be happier. If you follow me on social media, you know that we definitely keep busy! As for hobbies, I love photography. Capturing little moments that slip through our lives all too quickly makes me happy. I secretly hope to become a professional photographer at some point in my life!
Tell me a little about your family: My husband, Luke, and I have been married for nearly 7 years. We have two boys – Caleb, age 5, and Joshua, age 4.
What is most rewarding about parenting? Honestly, I feel that every part of parenting is rewarding. When I was diagnosed with Lymphoma in 2002, there was little chance of me surviving and when I beat all odds, I was told that because of the treatments I received, it was very unlikely that I would be able to have children. So I guess I would say the most rewarding part of parenting is just being able to hear someone call you “Mommy.” There are so many women out there that won’t ever hold that title so that’s something that every mother should be eternally grateful for, even when your little is saying it over and over and over again like a broken record!
What is the most challenging about parenting? The most challenging part of parenting is letting your littles to figure things out on their own. You want to be able to do everything for them and make life easy for them but you really need to give them space sometimes. Watching them grow and accomplish new things is so amazing and sad at the same time. You really just want them to stay small forever…
What advice do you have for new parents? Always do what you feel is best for your little ones, even if that’s not what everyone else thinks is “right.” Trust your instincts. No one knows your child better than you!
What advice do you have for new bloggers? Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Let your followers know the real you!
What was the most difficult part of blogging? The most difficult part of blogging for me is finding time to sit down and write. Between running my daycare, getting Pick-Ease out there, and taking care of my family, it’s like I have three full time jobs!
What do you love most about blogging? I love being able to offer parents the information that I myself look for and am sometimes unable to find.
What is your blog primarily about? My blog really is a mix of all things parenting related. You’ll find fun recipes for children, Picky Eater tips and tricks, crafts to do with your littles, and ideas for fun places to take them!
Why did you start blogging? I started blogging so that my followers could see the person behind my product.
Has the blogging world changed since you first began? Not that I am aware of.
What gives you your inspiration for content and photos? I write about things that I know other parents would find helpful and I always try to include as many photos as possible so that my readers know exactly what I’m talking about.
