There are some people that just have it. One of those people is a virtual friend I’ve met through Instagram named Rebecca Rakusin. She is the founder/creator of the popular website and social media platform called Bites for Tots where she gives simple, creative, healthy, and delicious ideas on what you can feed your little ones, even if they are picky eaters! The meals she creates are actually #foodforthewholefamily and instead of making your kids a separate meal than what you’ve made for yourself, you can utilize her recipes and make small or large portions and spend less time cooking multiple meals and spend more time eating with your children as a family.
As you get to know other women and especially other moms, you realize that you have a lot in common. One specific thing Becca and I have in common is we both love to cook. Not only do I think cooking is fun, but it is also somewhat therapeutic for me. I love finding a new recipe and mixing all of the ingredients into a “present” to my family and it is pretty gratifying seeing them gobble it up and want seconds and even leftovers the next day. It makes me happy to make them happy. Food is such an intimate part of our lives and can bring intimacy between your significant other and your children, especially if you make time to eat together as a family at the table. I know with our busy schedules it isn’t always easy to do this, but I always encourage families to try at least once a week, if not more whenever possible. And I consider a family at least one parent and one child or even multiple siblings eating together.
Bites for Tots has over 21.7k followers on Instagram and you can follow along by following this link here https://www.instagram.com/bitesfortots/?hl=en and on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Bitesfortotspage/ and of course you can get endless recipes and various blogs on motherhood by visiting her website https://bites4tots.com One of my favorite blogs is “What I Wish My Mother Told Me Before Having Children” that you can read here https://bites4tots.com/what-i-wish-my-mother-told-me-before-having-children/ She also shares some of her #momhacks that she’s learned over the years. Becca is a stay-at-home-mom and created this fun (and tasty) website and social media space for fun. So if you haven’t already, follow along and not only get to know this amazing cook/mom but also one of the nicest people I have met online. She is always responsive, willing to collaborate, and will also happily support you in your blogging and social media efforts!
But who is this wife and mother of three young children? The interview below will give you an inside look on who Becca is and you’ll learn more about what goes on Behind the Blog with her parenting, business, and her blog!
Name of Blog: Bites for Tots
What year did you start? I started when my daughter was 8 months old, so roughly June 2014
What is your current state/country you reside? I live in Toronto, Ontario
How did you come up with your blog/social media name: I came up with a name pretty quickly, since I was showing baby led weaning meals, spoon feeding and some feeding/food tips for babies through toddlers, I wanted a general name. Bites for Tots seemed like it fit perfect for what I was posting about.
What advice do you have for new parents?: Some advice for new time parents…I guess it would be to enjoy your baby more and worry less. Stop worrying about what milestones they haven’t learnt yet, stop comparing them to other children and start enjoying your baby more. Every baby learns at his or her own pace. My son didn’t say a word until 2.5 years Old and I spent too much time worrying about it when out of now where he started speaking full sentences. Unless there are major concerns you need to worry about, don’t worry about anything. S/he will not need to rocked to sleep forever, naps will end, they will not teeth forever. So just…relax, sit back and enjoy your new lives as parents.
What is something your followers don’t know about you? I cannot drink a beverage in a cup that I cannot see through…so it needs to be a clear glass mug…weird right?
What do you like to do in your free time/hobbies? I love sewing, drawing, and making jewelry!
How many monthly blog readers do you have? I think at one point I had a crazy amount of readers of 500-something! Usually it’s about 150-200.
Tell me a little about your family. How many kids do you have? I have been married for four and a half years and we have a spunky cheeky 3.5 year old boy named Liam, a squishy face 2.5 year old girl named Olivia, and I recently had my 3rd baby, her name is Emma.
What is most rewarding about parenting? I still consider myself a new mum, I have only been a mum for 3.5 years, although I do have lots of experience – I think the most rewarding thing about parenting is waking up the next morning to a bunch of healthy, happy kids.
What is the most challenging about parenting? Most challenging about parenting would have to be…taking care of myself. I forget to eat, I don’t sleep and I when I do eat – it’s just cereal with cold milk, when I do sleep – I am propped up on the couch because I was so tired I fell asleep watching TV with the kids. We all have to learn to take care of ourselves so that we can take better care of our children.
What advice do you have for new bloggers? Since I’m also pretty new at this, I would have to say just be yourself, especially if you’re a mommy blogger. Moms all over the world love realism and real life posts, they like to feel they aren’t alone when they give their kids Kraft dinner one night, or their house isn’t pristine and clean at all times. People enjoy realism and can relate to you better.
What was the most difficult part of blogging? The most difficult part of blogging for me, right now, would have to be keeping up with my blog posts! I just have NO time right now, but I can’t wait till I have more time to spill my heart out again.
What do you love most about blogging? What I love most about blogging would have to be the whole process. Having an idea, jotting it down, editing, publishing and then having people from all over the world email or comment you saying how your blog post touched them or made them feel good about themselves.
What is your blog about? My blogs are mostly about food recipes, I also have a category on some personal issues in my life before I got pregnant and when I lost my pregnancy last year in December. I also do reviews on my favourite products for feeding your baby/toddler.
Why did you start blogging? I started blogging because when I became a mom for the first time I was filled with all this emotion I didn’t know I had. I also had no one to share it with, my husband is a great listener but having a female perspective on what pregnancy felt like, sharing labor stories, and baby advice was really helpful and made me feel like I was a part of a community.
Has the blogging world changed since you first began? When I first started blogging/Instagram, I could count the amount of baby food pages with one hand, now I see hundreds every day!
What gives you your inspiration for content and photos? My inspiration comes from 2 main things, my children and my fridge/pantry. I don’t take fancy photos, but I do try and make them look pretty.
Thank you for reading this month’s Behind the Blog interview!
